When I am cutting from a template that does not have the seam allowance on it, am i adding the seam allowance by adding 1/4" line on the outside of the template and cutting from that line, or going backwards and marking a line inside the template and cutting from the template border.... i'm confused about it.:?

The first one. You add the 1/4" outside of the template and cut.

One easy and accurate way to accomplish this is to tape yout template to the top of your ruler, leaving 1/4" from the edge where you will be cutting. I use this method when doing lots of the same shape. I'm not sure if it is worth the time if you are just making one block.

Hi and Welcome from southern Indiana!!

Most template directions will tell you to add 1/4" when you cut.
