This question is for those of you who quilt on regular sewing machines. Do you use Machine Quilting Thread or would it be ok to use All-purpose? I've used both and find the Machine thread a little too heavy. Or is it me?

I like to use machine quilting thread, cotton. I have used Gutermann though. Just make sure you always use a good quality thread, not the cheap stuff.

I love Marathon Thread....... its technically embroidery thread but I use it to quilt on my DM or my longarm...... price is very reasonable and it looks fantastic!

If you are meandering or quilting like that I use rayon embroidery thread or the clear thread.
If quilting in the ditch I use regular thread.

I've used both. I prefer the 50 weight Machine Quilting Threads. My favorites are Aurifil and Wonderfil, I've used Coats & Clark Dual Duty, but it's usually cheaper to get a larger spool of Aurifil than a few smaller Coats & Clark spools. Guttermann works well for me too. I tried Connecting Threads thread, but my machine didn't like it.

I have always used Coats & Clarks for machine quilting but lately I have had a problem with it shredding and breaking so now I am going to look for a better thread. Not sure what brand to get right now.

You may have to experiment. My machines are picky in what thread is used. I do like the aurifil and also the superior threads.

I have used Threadart's own http://www.threadart.com/shop/category.aspx?catid=246 for my Free motion and other quilting needs for over 4 years and I find it excellent and for me in the UK, even with Postage, their prices are unbeatable, as is their quality.

They have a Sale on at present so I am awaiting a delivery of an order just now

I use machine quilting thread, cotton piecing thread, cotton/poly, poly embroidery thread, metalics, really any thread that I like the looks of for the quilt I am working on :D:D:D

If it is a matter of budget, then use what you have. Otherwise I would recommend getting the quilting thread. It is available in different thicknesses. It has to withstand quite a bit of wear and go through all layers. You don't want cheap thread to tear in the middle of the quilting.

Many quilters like the feel of the thicker thread because it shows off the quilting more.

I usually use Coats and Clark, but that's only because I have a huge stash built up of it.

I use 50wt Aurifil for both piecing and machine quilting. For me, it is a good weight thread for both.
