Here's my magic pinwheels that seems similar to the new pinwheel templates that are so popular now.
I found a charm pack at Walmart to test this out. I used 25 charms (5 per row) and added a 3" border.
I put clear tape on my ruler and traced the lines from the instruction sheet.

This is the first time I've posted with multiple pics.....I'm hoping everything shows up ok

This is how I did my template.

This shows the ruler lined up on the fabric

I'd like more variation, but didn't want to overthink this test!

Looks like a great idea.

Very pretty little quilt. I like how you made your template. Thanks for the idea.

SharonC 07-31-2010 10:27 AM

Great idea for the template...do you have much fabric waste using this method?

Rhonda 07-31-2010 10:31 AM

I love this method. I have always wanted to try a tessellation but haven't ever figured it out yet.

greencat 07-31-2010 10:32 AM

The extra squares (in the 2nd pic) are about 2-1/2 inches. Big enough to use in the border, or for another project.

Pineapple Princess 07-31-2010 10:55 AM

Great idea!

Thanks :) I love the pattern and can picture the border.

Looks great!!!!

Yarn or Fabric 07-31-2010 12:31 PM

Oh my that will be pretty but the thrifty side of me is cringing at the waste! I know. breathe deep.. exhale.. lol

That looks like it would be really fun to make. I have a flip flop block that you can do that kind of stuff with and I have yet to use it - had to have it, couldn't live without it.... I really need to break that baby out and use it one of these days...

I am really looking forward to seeing your finished quilt! It's going to be so pretty!

butterflywing 07-31-2010 01:40 PM

niiiiice!

i have some questions:

 what is the size of the template?
 what is the size of the blocks that you sewed together first? are they the same?
 did you arbitrarily choose the 3/4" in from the corner, or is that a given measurement?

quiltinggirl 07-31-2010 01:49 PM

Awesome technique! Thanks for sharing. :)

caliquocat 07-31-2010 02:17 PM

Pretty fabrics, nice job! I made one of these & thank goodness for my design wall or I would have gone nuts. I found it lots of fun but tedious.

I have also made one using the same method, and almost went mad because I could not get the last row to match up, so I just went with it, after a solid day of trying it this way and that.

After I had finished it off the best way I could, I found that I had dropped the second last row on the floor and didnt realise - I then unpicked it and made it up properly. Give you an idea how messy my floor is when I am in the middle of a project

I got the pattern from the Australian Patchwork & Quilting 1998 Yearbook. More than happy to send it to you.

brookemarie19 07-31-2010 02:40 PM

I love this look so much!! Can you answer a few questions for me... Where can you find a print out for the template? And what size is your template. Thanks so much for you help.

sewaholic 07-31-2010 03:24 PM

If you look at her template it is a 3 and a half inch square. :-D
Very clever idea.

kay carlson 07-31-2010 03:25 PM

That's the same concept as the Twisted pinwheels(?) from Country Schoolhouse in Superior, WI. The little leftover aquares can be used in another project. I loved the project and found cutting the individual squares and leaving them on the cutting mat until assembly was the trick for me to assemble in order and with ease! A fun project to be sure.
Thanks for sharing your ideas!!!

Very clever idea.

but what size are the blocks that make up the new 'fabric'? are they the same size or larger? i mean the unfinished size.

simplecomforts 07-31-2010 03:54 PM

Very cute I like that idea.

littlehud 07-31-2010 05:56 PM

dkabasketlady 08-01-2010 06:30 AM

Very pretty!

Butterflywing - I used 5" charm squares. Found a bundle with a great price at Walmart to test this out.

The markings on the 3-1/2" template are 3/4" except for the 1" on the upper right side and I noted 'UP' on my template. Looking at the template, I turned it to the left just enough for the intersection lines to line up with the fabric squares intersecting. I think that shows in the pic. Just keep the 'up' in the same position when you move the template and all the cuts will come out the same. Either leave the cuts in place or move them to a design wall (mines on the floor) to keep them in order.

QweenBee 08-03-2010 09:20 PM

Wow thats neat! I would bee a mess If I did that!

ajonkarl 08-15-2010 08:26 AM

I found this pattern which is the same block with different cutting instructions. It is made square by square.

WOW now that is really neat!

Beautiful looking quilt. I've always wanted to make one of these, but just haven't been able to figure it out until now. But I'm still not sure I've figured it out. In your template it says 3/4" on three sides and in the upper right hand corner it says 1". Why aren't all four 3/4" or 1". Why does it make a difference to have that extra 1/4" in the upper right hand corner. I hope you can explain this. Thanks!!

KGoodhand 08-15-2010 01:50 PM

I have a new addition to my 'to do' list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ritzquilts 08-15-2010 02:17 PM

There is a book or was a book out called Square Dance that I did that method out of

greencat 08-15-2010 02:21 PM

quilterguy27 - I just followed the instructions that I received for the template! I really don't know why the one corner is 1".
I tested this out by making the template, then drew a number of 5" squares (maybe 3 rows of 3) on plain paper, then traced the template on my grid and cut them out and placed them together in rows. It worked! If that 1" really bugs you, you could try this before cutting any fabric (use 3/4" on all corners)

quilterguy27 08-16-2010 05:42 AM

No, it doesn't really bug me. I was just curious if there was a reason for it or if it might have been an error. I will give it a try tho. Maybe even both ways and see what the difference is. Maybe it has to do with the way it swirls or something to do with the seam allowance. I'm just one of those people like a three year old: Why? Why? Why? I can question something to death, but I will let this go for now and try it out and see if I can figure out WHY. Thanks! I do appreciate that you posted this.

Dar-midlife 09-08-2010 04:24 PM

The small template is 3 1/2 inches and the line is 1 inch in from the corner. The size of block for that template is 5inches.
