Making a Design Board
 

I have two 4x8 pink foam boards that I plan to cover for a design board. I'm considering covering it with batting, then flannel so I can remove & wash the flannel when it gets messed up. I want them covered separately for easy storage.
I need opinions. If you think this is a good idea, how would you recommend attaching the flannel and what's the best way to hold the two boards together? What's the best way to keep them upright?

This is what I would do personally. I would cover the two foam boards with muslin like fabric with a fabric "hinge" so they can be folded into the 4x8. I would take the flannel and make it like a fitted sheet. (?). I would than just lean it up against a wall, it will be slightly inclined but that should be OK unless your space is really limited. If you want to store it just fold it in half and slide it under a bed.

I can't help. I don't have a design wall, I use my bed.

I thought the same thing that I would want to wash the flannel but after 10 years, I never have done it. I use one of those sticky tape rollers to clean it off. I don't know why you would use batting. I used the 1" insulation board found at Home Depot. Used a dozen of safety pins and wove some wax string thru the pins so the flannel is snug & tight, kind of like a corset. I now have three of them and I don't know how I lived without them for as long as I did.

My insulation boards are tongue and groved so they stay together really well. I covered mine in flannel. Wrapped the flannel to the back and used a stapler (open it up and just go for it). I have had it for 6 years. I use a lint roller on it every so often, but haven't needed to wash the flannel yet. Also, I moved twice. With some help, we pulled it apart enough to we could fold the sides together, flannel in the center. You will love it!

My design wall is covered with headliner fabric - like what is in a car. It was on sale so it was as cheap as flannel. Word of caution - if you have cats they will love to climb it!

Nancy's Notions has flannel that is printed with a 2" grid that would be great for a design wall.

I use cheap flannel. To clean it, use freezer paper. Iron it to the flannel and then lift the freezer paper off. It picks up all the threads. You can use the freezer paper over and over until it stops picking up thread.
