The book "Mariners compass quilts" by Judy Mathieson is wonderful!!
I took the pattern to Staples and had them enlarge it to fit the dimensions of a double bed...so the possibilities are endless. She also has directions in there on how to create your OWN mariners compass designs. :) Good luck! |
Here is a good block to try out. It was a BOM here on the board. For many it was a first attempt at PP too :D:D:D

the book "Mariner's Compass An American Quilt Classic" by Judy Mathieson is a great book. It is a paper back by C & T Publishing 1987.
It has lots of patterns for different compasses and also directions on how to design your own. I made a lot of compasses years ago but have yet to put them in a quilt. DH brings it to my attention every now and then. I even have the border pieces cut and some sewed together. I just lost my interest in finishing it. Won't sell it 'cause someday it just might be interesting again! kathyd |

I bought the booklet on a 3 D mariners compass from the site www. phillipsfiberarts.com and it is really easy to make. I had it put together in an evening and so it all goes to gether quickly. After you make one, you can make a nice big quilt for a bed. I made a wall hanging with mine. It makes about a 19" circle I think and it has instructions for making it a square and that will make it a 20" x 20" block. Make about 4 or 6 and you will have a nice quilt for a bed. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay
