I'm new to this group. Did you notice my avatar? I get creative. It actually has rope stitched around the border, and a seahorse medallion in the center. (OK, I thought it was a good way to hide the points not quite right).

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:38 AM

btw this is my second quilt. My first was a sampler.

amma 04-02-2011 08:38 AM

Very pretty and clever too :D:D:D

quilttiludrop 04-02-2011 08:40 AM

Amazing! You really took on a challenge for your 2nd quilt!

Raggiemom 04-02-2011 08:42 AM

It's a beautiful quilt. Welcome!

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:43 AM

Thanks! I did! I commented on diff. post about the wasted fabric.

sewmuchmore 04-02-2011 08:43 AM

Hello, and welcome aboard. Love your Mariner's Compass

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:44 AM

btw my first fabric choice was not "right" so I changed it and quilted over it, so the points really do have more dimension.

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:45 AM

Thx!

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:46 AM

oops. I meant to say thx to Sew. I love reading the board, thank you for welcoming me.

Welcome from Texas. Beautiful Mariner's..love the colors.

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:51 AM

Thx Reggie! In a diff topic I'm talking about my new project. I'm making a lap throw for a guy in my painting class. It's for his wife. He will make me a salad bowl of wood in exchange. Anyhow, the topic was paper piecing, and there are some good tutorials there.

I really like this group already!

CAS49OR 04-02-2011 08:52 AM

I've been quilting quite awhile and haven't tried MC yet....where did you get the pattern?

glowworm 04-03-2011 04:29 AM

You took the bull by the horns. Super!

Pretty compass!

busygranny 04-03-2011 08:04 AM

Can I ask what pattern you used? It's lovely and different than any I've seen before.

Congratulations on getting thru the Mariners Compass. I made one as well. It is a king size in total measurements. I also used a rope quilted around the outside of the star, in between the lines. My star is 36 inches and had to get my hubby to draft it for me as there was no pattern big enough for it. I made it for my son's 26 year retirement from the Coast Guard. Jan

GramaLaura 04-03-2011 01:13 PM

OMG.....looks like you are a nautural! Love your avatar :-D

CAS49OR 04-03-2011 01:36 PM

Thanks Susan. Then I had to figure out how to hang it on the wall. The backing is an old sheet, so I just used a hot glue gun and tacked it to the wall. I figure it's never going to move, and I wasn't that worried about the back. It worked well, it is hanging nice and flat against the wall.

I am thinking about doing the same with the sampler quilt hanging over my bed. I used tacks and it is starting to sag.

CAS49OR 04-03-2011 01:38 PM

I do have a large picture of it. I don't know how to share it here.
