Math help - please?
I don't have a quilter's calculator or a quilt software program that will make the conversion.
The pattern calls for 7 1/2 inch fussy cut pictures from a panel. My panel that I intend to use has 61/2inch pictures. The pictures are to be bordered by 4 inch blocks and 4 1/2 inch HST blocks on 2 sides - across the top and down the right side of the pictures. What size do I need to make the solid blocks and the HST blocks? |
Can you post a picture? Your sizes don't make sense to me. It sounds like the finished size of the fussy cuts is 7" (from 7.5" cuts). And the solid and HST pieces are 3.5" finished. Cut at 4" for the solid, and I guess 4.5" squares to make 3.5" finished HST from.
Assuming that's all correct, then what you need depends again on your panel. You said 6.5" pictures - I will assume that is the cut size - so they will finish at 6" blocks in the pattern. Then you will need 3" finished squares around it. Cut the solids at 3.5". And the HST pieces cut from 4" square (you will have to trim the HSTs down to 3.5" after you make them, so they will finish at 3".) |
Have you googled online to try to find a free online calculator? I think I've seen some on some of the quilt store sites.
Sorry I can't help! |
Before you change the pattern, there is something else to consider. With many panels the pictures are not square with the grain, and when you cut them out you have something less than what they seem to measure. The easiest thing *may* be to put frames around each picture, and square the resulting blocks off to the size that you need.

Thank you Krista! I knew it wasn't too much of a variance. I can add, subtract, multiply and do fractions in my head - give me a quilt measurement and I become a quivering, drooling idiot.

Oooohhh... I hadn't thought about that aspect of it. I know my center panel picture is a wonky mess to square up.

If you don't decide to frame your squares and end up cutting them at 6.5 inches, your squares and half squares should be 3.5 inches.

This is what I would do
