Measurement help
I am making pillow covers for my daughter and cannot, for the life of me, figure out what measurement I need to cut. The pillows are 25" x 25". I'd like to do the covers that have the overlapping in the insertion. Anyone know how to figure out the sizing?

I was taught to size the pillow case the same size or slightly smaller so that you get a nice plump pillow. It depends on what kind of insert you have for the pillow. Is it a knife edge pillow form or a foam square with a box shape? There was a neat link on QB this week for a pillow that used a men's button shirt front for the pillow back. The button placket was centered into the pillow back for putting the pillow form in.

You are talking about pillow shams. I just make covers for our pillows and sometimes I use batting so they look like little quilts and just cover the pillows.

I would cut the front pc. 25 by 25 inches. The back piece I would cut 25 wide and about 32 inches long. Then I would cut the 32 inches in half so they now measure 25 by 16....finish one edge of each piece of the back..lay the two pieces on the front ..right sides together ..over lap to fit and sew around all 4 sides.

I recently made pillow cases such as you describe. I followed a tutorial on you tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhZnHhbcN-Q). I know you said you didn't have sound on your computer - so I listened to the measurements part to refresh my memory.
It was recommended that you cut the fabric for the front 1 inch bigger on all sides as is the size of your pillow (so for a 25 x 25 inch pillow - 26 inches). For the back, the same 1 inch plus add 4 inches (this is for the overlapping part - the envelope). So for the same pillow, the fabric for the back would be cut 26 x 30. You cut the back fabric in half. If you have a really full pillow, I am thinking an extra inch or too can be added. Which I am really saying about the same thing as puddingtain. I was using leftover quilt blocks for my pillow cases - so my front/back fabrics ended up being a little bigger than what was recommended in this tutorial. By a couple of inches I would say.
