Another "what size" post :)

This is a quilt design I sketched up (on paper) awhile ago. I'm using Paint to sketch this now (and definitely not at work while doing this  ). The goal is for the seams to actually, you know, line up and whatnot so disregard anything that looks slightly off, just because it's Paint).

But there are 2 size rectangles. 1 will be square (I know to cut 7/8" - 1" larger than finished size). I'm stumped on the rectangle. I want it to be (finished) twice as long as it is wide. So what size do I start with???

To pick a number, let's say the finished square is 4" (so cut 4 7/8" ) and the finished rectangle is 4"x8". What size piece do I start with???

I had to resort to making a template when I made HRTs (half rectangle triangles). Here's a bit of how-to than may help you. http://www.quiltdesignnw.com/PDF/HRT_2x4.pdf Good luck. They aren't as easy as they look.

I see the square at 4" finished, and I see the rectangles at 8 by 4" finished. I think if you look at it like 3 blocks instead of a square and rectangle, it'll pop out at ya.

It's the same as a square, the finished block + 7/8. You're still dealing with a HST.

No, that I know isn't true. First prototype... because the legs aren't equal, you lose more fabric when it all goes together

Where are you seeing 3 blocks?? Could you highlight it with paint or something? I'm not seeing 3...

When I look at it, I break it down into 12 blocks
3 rows, of 4 blocks each.
are you wanting the finished block to b e square, instead fo rectangle shaped

I see 12 blocks and that is how I would piece it.
