Memory Quilt Photo Question

Have any of you quilters used Bubble Jet Set when you use muslin for the photos? Also can photos be printed on tone on tone white fabric or should I only use muslin, if so, which is the best muslin to use?
I have made memory quilts before and have only used June Taylors photo fabric which gets expensive if you have a lot of photos.

You'd have to do some research but I know there are some products that allow you to make your own printer sheets but I can't remember what they are at the moment. But I do know they are out there for sure.

I love the jetset. it is easy to use and very economical. and there is no learning curve. the directions are very easy and easy to follow.

Check out Caryl Bryer Fallert's web site - she has a ton of info on this.

Thanks for the www site. I've just been using Printed Treasures for years because I don't have to "treat" the fabric. I think I would NOT use muslin if I were doing it myself.

I like to use Kona cotton, when using Bubble Jet Set. Because of the tighter weave then muslin.

I don't think the tone on tone would be successful, because the pattern areas might not take the ink the same way as the background. But it wouldn't hurt to try one and see what happens.

When I did some photos on fabric I bought tight woven muslin from Joann's. It was special muslin (210 weave?) made for printing on fabric. You might have to ask someone (but also look at the muslin labels, as my Joann's does not employ anyone who knows anything about sewing).

pfd's are good to use for printing pictures (prepared for dyeing) fabrics- some quilt shops carry them- also dye companies such as Dharma Trading Company.
or you can prepare any fabric you want to print on-
i've made labels with prepared fabrics (pre-washed with detergent- rinsed twice---no fabric softener- either used with soda ash or bubble jet set---pressed to freezer paper & run through the printer- set aside to cure for 24 hours-then heat set-i've used some white on whites- and other prints-that went with the quilt the label was for-
the white on whites do show through the picture/text-so you may not want to use it for photo's --unless they would enhance the picture.
it is easy to prepare and use what ever you want- and much more (cost-effective) than the pre-made fabric printer sheets.

muslin isn't best for photos. you need a tighter woven fabric. i bought a packet of fabric squares to make another memory quilt but have yet to do it. i think i'd have to soak the fabric in Bubble jet first, so i'm not fond of starting.

I made the mistake of printing a photo of a person on tone on tone white, the persons face was all dots like they had some kind of disease....live and learn. Might have been cool on a landscape...

Thank you everyone for responding. I have purchased the bubble Jet product. Now a trip LQS & buy either Kona cotton or pfd fabric.

Yes to both. I did a quilt for a friend. He wanted the pictures to come out looking gold. I found a fabric that was the shade he wanted. I treated it with Bubble Jet set and printed it on an HP printer.

To feed the fabric through the printer, I cut the fabric to be slightly smaller than 8 1/2 by 11. Then lightly sprayed the back of the fabric with repositionable basting spray. I made sure to only spray around the edges. I mounted the fabric onto a sheet of paper and fed it into the printer. It worked like a charm.

For your fabric selection, be sure the background print doesn't interfere with the picture. The first fabric we picked made the person in the photo look like she had acne. oops!

Bubble Jet/Freezer paper

This is a good tutorial for the Bubble Jet method of using freezer paper on your fabric.
