How many men on here quilt? Husbands? We have a long arm and am having trouble getting enthused. Any ideas???

thimblebug6000 05-16-2011 05:04 PM

A few that I know of..... gunny148; Holice; Lostn'51; Lockeb;
My DH doesn't quilt, but he always helps when I need a 2nd opinion. I did a quick forum search, so I'm sure you'll find a few more, and especially now that so many members are buying the long arm set-ups.

glassnquilts 05-16-2011 05:24 PM

My dad bought a longarm and learned how to sew. He and my mother quilt together. She is a hand quilter.

chairjogger 05-16-2011 05:28 PM

The Long arm.. wow.. unfamiliar territory. BUT not men quilting.

Husband's grandfather, my grandfather - from different regions of the same state. Husband sews his buttons, seat for a cooler motorcycle in the summer. If he had time, he would. just 14 hour days fizzle him right now.. I do see this as a thing a little later.

Congratulations ! You can do this too ! don't get discouraged. It is a mechanical thing. you'll be great !

Better be careful - all us crazy quiltin girls are going to want to clone you. :):) Oh by the way, a couple of good irons would be nice for the Mrs. :)

Quilter7x 05-16-2011 05:46 PM

Don't forget about Eddie!

You don't say your first name, so I'm going to call you Buddy.

If you send a PM to any of the guys mentioned above, I'm sure they will be happy to share their thoughts and ideas with you. All of them are very nice guys.

Buddy, do you have any pets? If yes, make something on the long arm for them. They won't care if the stitches are perfect or not and that will give you an opportunity to practice on your long arm. Good luck!

hperttula123 05-16-2011 05:49 PM

I wish I could get my boyfriend to quilt. He would do so much better than me. I think you just need to be in the right mood for it. Maybe there is a certain new style of quilting you could try. That helps me.

Sandee 05-16-2011 05:50 PM

And Don.

QuiltE 05-16-2011 05:57 PM

There's some more ... cna't think who!

Have the poll results been tallied yet as to how many men?

Rhonda 05-16-2011 06:03 PM

Here is a thread that was posted not too long ago. You can find most of the men quilters here.

Stewy (board name stewyscrewy) is another LAQ. Here is a link you might like about some of the projects the guys have made: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-41725-1.htm

SewMomma66 05-16-2011 06:50 PM

I polled the members here last week and Holice was the only one to answer.

franie 05-16-2011 06:58 PM

Lots of men quilt. My hubby would be good at it. I am afraid to let him try my long arm--I might never get it again. LOL
DONISEW and Eddie are here-Stewy too.

Painiacs 05-16-2011 07:32 PM

Screwy stewy loves to LA'

sushi 05-16-2011 07:41 PM

I just took 5 quilts to a LAQ who's a guy. You can contact him at [email protected].

wolfkitty 05-16-2011 10:45 PM

There is another post going about male quilters. It will be totaled up, etc. and posted next week, I think she said.

I love to see what men quilters do! You all do such wonderful work!

Annaquilts 05-16-2011 10:52 PM

My husband is just starting to dabble in quilting. He helps me with drawing quilt line designs and sewing machines. He also does what would probably be considered primative paper piecing to save scraps.

crafty_linda_b 05-16-2011 10:58 PM

Jeff aka Hoopa is a quilter too...
Good luck on using the LA machine..once you start I am sure it will be like riding a bicycle..too much fun to stop doing!! I would love to have one myself and do hope to before I am too old to stand and run it..Opps....I think it might be too late for me now *L*

There's quite a few - including my husband, also known as GOM (grumpy old man). He's not registered, but I've posted some of his quilts, which are, well, different! GOM pieces as well as quilts, but on a domestic machine. We don't have room for a longarm. Keep it up - if you haven't already done so, try piecing your own blocks, you might find you like putting blocks together into your own quilt. Most of the men I know who are involved in piecing and quilting are quite adventurous with colour and design and this makes for some very interesting quilts.

CoventryUK 05-16-2011 11:38 PM

You guys on here are so inspirational!!! Love all the quilts you show. Great that you are all creating heirlooms!!!

Queen 05-17-2011 01:08 AM

I love looking at all the quilts made by our male quilters. They look at things differently and it comes out in the colors and pattern selection. Makes me want to step outside of my little box.'

My husband quilts! luckily we have very different styles he is currently exploring applique and embroidery on flannel and is just planning a 'dragon' quilt with embroidery and applique on cotton! So far he has not been too keen to play on the Longarm just yet but its only a matter of time! lol

Go to Manquilter.com and talk to Matt!!!! If he can't "enthuse" you....nobody can!!!!

gunny148 05-17-2011 03:32 AM

I did not see Bills name. My DW GF was a chief and quilted

jitkaau 05-17-2011 03:36 AM

I would love a long arm - such different design possibilities. However, the price is fairly prohibitive here and one really needs to get heaps of business to pay for it. If I could afford one I'd be practising as many fancy variations of feathers that I could. Making a wholecloth would be exciting - especially if the fabric was black with bright coloured cotton sewn for the quilting.I would also like to try the black - light or fluorescent threads on the quilt as well.

Scrap Happy 05-17-2011 03:41 AM

I forgot to mention I used to work at a LQS and there was a man who there worked part time who did LAQ. His work was gorgeous. He was originally from Colorado and made the prettiest southwestern quilts too.

QuiltinMama 05-17-2011 03:42 AM

My husband is my Quality Control person.. he cuts off all the threads and checks all my seams etc... He is great on picking out colors and telling me what works and what does not work.. He is a computer analyst and he can do math in his head so whenever I need help figuring out how much yardage or whatever he is there for me... Also he knows what a fat quarter is and loves going to quilt shows and quilt shops!!
Keep on quilting and quilt something for charity lap robes for vets or our soldiers ... enjoy your longarm..
Hugs

My husband DOESN'T quilt...but he faithfully sleeps under the ones I create every night...and that's saying a whole lot!!!

I love men who quilt...my paternal grandfather was a tailor...back in the good ol' days when men's "ready wear" was not available. He was so very good at his job that even after the advent of the "ready's", he had a thriving business until the day he passed on. I have so many fond memories of going to the tailor shop and sitting up on the high tables while he worked...and those huge scissors!! and all that wonderful wool!!

Sorry...I got off topic here...but it spurred some very pleasant memories!! Just had to share.......

My Wife Made Me! ROTFLMBO!!! Love the pic to go with your name! Is your wife on the board, too?

Pickle 05-17-2011 04:42 AM

My husband does all my quilting for me. I was going to quit making quilts because it is so expensive to have it done, for me at least. So we bought a pre owned frame and a brother quilting machine and he learned to quilt. We do not have a long arm but he enjoys it a lot. I think if you would go price what it would cost to have one quilted it would make you more willing to learn to do it yourself, and also give you great satisfaction of a job well done. There are many men quilters.Good Luck

First, I would like to ask where did you get the nickname Pickle, that was mine all through grade scholl, rhymed so nice with Nickel and I love dill pickles. LOL
What president made a quilt? I will look it up. Using a LGA is working with machinery and the process similar to using a lathe or grinder in a machine shop and taking care of it a lot like keeping your car running. When you see the results of your work and get paid for it, you will like it even better. My DH repairs all my machines but so far hasn't done any sewing.
Good luck and make a name for yourself.
Many quilts at Paducah are made my men and win prizes.

My husband loved to go and help me pick up fabric, one day when I came home from work he was sitting at my machine and sewing up a storm, he did some pretty awesome quilts.

Oh yes! I've seen her posts. Thanks, and I checked out your website. You all do wonderful quilting!

QuiltNama 05-17-2011 06:02 AM

The quilt shop I work at the husband does all of the longarm quilting. His wife makes the quilts.

Holice 05-17-2011 06:04 AM

Not all men Long Arm quilt. Lots of us do it with a "regular" machine. There is a Yahoo group for men who quilt as well as another titled Manquilters. There is even a group in NYC in the theatre group of which most are men and some quilt backstage during the shows. So, look for us, we are out there. We even have fabric exchanges, block exchanges and an annual Retreat in the North East. This year will be near Albany NY

Have sent quilts off to a l/a er and he's a man. Does a really good job and is nice to talk to.

I think when you say you're having trouble getting enthused, it concerns me. Why are you trying to quilt? Income? Because you purchased a longarm and need to make it 'pay'? I have a set of golf clubs, but can't seem to get enthused, and would be very upset if if felt I HAD to do it. Do something you ARE enthused about!

Pickle 05-17-2011 06:42 AM

I go the name Pickle from my older sisters. As a child I loved pickles and they used to call me their sweet little pickle. As the years went by they changed it to just Pickle ( I wonder why that was?) LOL
Then as I got even older they just finally just narrowed it down to PIC
Pickle

Bill, if I may... <start inspirational music>

Realizing that from time to time it may be difficult to become enthused about quilting, I would point out that as a man, you have the priviledge - perhaps even the obligation to contribute to a centuries old tradition of men building quilts. Historically speaking, men were quilting before women, were doing it professionally in Europe, and brought it with them to the New World. So you see Mr. Bill, <music swells> you must stand - enthusiastically - and claim your heritage for your brothers past and yet to come, and help those today who do not yet realize their vital role in the history that is being made right now.<end music>

Now, go, my friend, and quilt something!
