I posted today a quilt I made for my friend's Grand son. She got all the materials including the thread, and she got red Mettler thread, #600. At some point the thread started to break, which is kind of unusual for Mettler. I opened the machine to clean it and make sure that nothing was caught. I was very surprised to find so much lint. My whole machine was red inside. There was lint everywhere. I cleaned it and the breakage stopped. I used Mettler a while ago and don't remember it being so linty. Has anyone else experience this recently? I now know which thread I will not used again.

I wonder if it was an older or newer spool? I have not heard of Mettler doing this before.

it could be you had a needle with too small of an eye, which will cause the thread to fray...lots of lint... a larger needle may solve the problem

I have used Mettler for years (still have some unused spools in my stash). It has always been a linty thread for me. I will use something else once I use up what I have.

I found the Mettler silk finish to be linty when I did the twins' quilts. Maybe that is what you used?

Maride, it's funny you should mention this. I've been very disappointed in Mettler thread over the last year. I'm wondering if they've changed manufacturing countries or processes, because I've had the same experience as you. I'm not planning on buying any more of it. I'll use up what I've got and that's that! I'm much happier with Aurifil and even Guterman(which many folks poo-poo in the quilting world.) I've found Gutterman has less lint than Mettler. And Aurifil has practically none. So, I'm stocking up big time on the Aurifil. Who knows when they'll lower their standards too:<

strange, Mettler has been less linty for me than even Guterman....

I was using a too small needle for a while and switched to a bigger one, but that was no solution. It was still linty. I am in love with Isa Cord and Sulky. Master Piece is also very good. No lint at all! I am glad I am not the only one having this problem.

I'll have to tell my sister about this as she uses Mettler all of the time. But she cleans her machine after every project. I use Gutterman and have not had much of a problem. That is what my lqs sells most and what I learned with, but will try some of the ones mentioned. Thanks for the heads up.

I never heard it being linty, but some machines just like certain thread (I learned from experience)

Wow. A couple of months ago, my guild had a guest speaker from a local sewing machine store come speak about thread. She recommended Metler. She said that they saw a lot less lint build up with it. Hmmm. She did say that using metallic thread needles helped to cut down on the lint because the eye of the needle is coated with teflon to help the thread smooth through.
I personally use Gutterman for most of my sewing. |

I personally use Gutterman for most of my sewing. Yes, most LQS in my areas carry Mettler so I've used it for many years. Again, no problem up until about a year ago. Then I noticed the inside of my bobbin area fills up with lint fast. The same folks have "warned" me away from Guterman(they don't sell it;) . But, the Guterman gives off much less lint than the new silk-finish Mettler. It's not about machines "liking" some threads better. Lint is lint. My machine likes Mettler fine. It's the worry that whatever is showing up in the bobbin area is also in the head of the machine-which I'm not able to clean out. |
