Minky Question
I love the look of some of the baby quilts I've seen on the Board that use minky for the backing. I have a few questions about this...Do you pre-wash the minky? Do you use a light batting in addition to the minky? Thanks for you help, and have a good day.

I do not pre-wash the minky (I am a per-washer of cottons though) because it is 100% polyester and will not shrink. I have used no batting and have used flannel and also warm and natural. So it just depends on how heavy you want it to be. Here in E Texas we do not need a heavy quilt. Minky is very warm all by itself.

I haven't used Minky but I have used fleece. I do not prewash and I do not use batting. People I have given them to just love them.

I don't prewash and I use Warm and Natural batting. I don't particularly like working with it (you get fuzz all over the place when you cut it!) but it is so nice and cozy, everyone loves the feel of it.

Thanks for asking this question, I too have been wondering.

Where do you get the "real" minky?
|
I've made minky quilts and didn't use batting. I don't prewash, as stated above, it doesn't shrink.

I've used Minky alot on my quilt backs. After the first one, now EVERYBODY wants their quilt backed with minky!! I have not used batting with it as it tends to be heavy with just the minky. After showing one of my quilts I was told "wow, that would be awesome to sleep under in my birthday suit!" LOL!!!
grammy of 6 - I've used fabric.com and theminkyboutique.com. It does come in 60 inch widths. |
I haven't used Minky, but I have made several baby blankets from fleece. Since Minky is similar, they make wonderful throws. I DO wash my fleece, but with my allergies, I HAVE to wash everything. I didn't put batting in them, they are nice and thick without the batting.
