I want to make a wall hanging from a black and white picture my DD took of my DSIL & DGS. Don't even know what to search to find fabric to do it. I would ideally like to have solids in white, 5 shades of increasingly darker grays then black but could also do shades of tan or brown. Does anyone know of a source where I can find this or key words to search? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

gray's have notoriously been difficult to find but i have noticed in the past few months there have been a few more showing up. try searching landscape fabrics and if sites offer color links check out the blacks. i usually find grays with the landscapes though. ... or you could dye your own ;)

Kona carries the biggest color selection that I know of in solids. Try googling Kona solid fabrics. Maybe some tone-on-tones could be mixed in to get the # of fabrics that you want to use.
Good Luck! |
You could also use some of the tone-on-tone or texture fabrics out there, like Moda Marble or Robert Kaufman Fusions or Hoffman 1895 Batiks. They would be a good break from solids, but offer the same basic appearance.

You can use Caryl Bryer Fallert's Gradations fabric:

Black-and-white prints with varying amounts of either color "read" as grays, too.
Black dye is also really easy to come by (and when I use it, it usually comes out gray, LOL), and I've seen people hand-dye fabric using mason jars. so you could always try to color the fabric yourself. |

Tonals would work very well. I made a mule wallhanging and used 6 different shades of grays and browns.

You folks are so amazing! Thank you all for your input. I'm such a newbie to the quilting world and to compound that I only have a Walmart and Hobby Lobby for fabric. All your suggestions are truely appreciated. It looks like the best match for my pattern will be nuances. I will post pix when I have a finished product. Again, thaks soooooo much!

Here's a shaded batik which will give you four shades of grey:

I used to have trouble finding yellows and gray. Suddenly, both are much more plentiful. Wonder why? Marge L.
