My Black Friday packages are arriving.

I ordered many different quilt goodies from all over and it's exciting to see what comes in the mail everyday. The biggest box so far has been from Connecting Threads. I forgot I ordered coffee and was semi disappointed when I opened that box today. LOL Anyone else waiting on great bargain packages to come?

DebraK 11-28-2012 11:51 AM

nope. I only made one purchase from Fabric.com, and even then, I had abandoned my cart. They sent me an email a day or two later offering me an additional 15% off the great deals I already had in the cart. How could I refuse that?

I did pump some money into the LQS on Small Business Saturday, so there was some immediate satisfaction there ;-)

owlvamp 11-28-2012 11:54 AM

Nope however I did go to Joann's with my daughters and sister. We got a few goodies.

josykatz 11-28-2012 12:08 PM

I'm very new to quilting and sewing. I've been borrowing my mothers sewing machine to work on which is nice but I really wanted one of my own. During the Black Friday specials Amazon was selling the "SINGER 4423 Heavy Duty Model Sewing Machine With Metal Interior Frame and Stainless Steel Bed plate" for $99 there was only few left and the sale was ending in 15 min so my husband bought it for me.

It has a top loading bobbin, 3 needle positions, drop down feed dogs, automatic needle threader and sews 1,100-stitches-per-minute. I kind of wished I had read the reviews before we bought it, but it was in the fever of black Friday madness and fear on missing a good sale.

I'm having trouble getting it to work properly and my free motion stitches are really bad. The first time I dropped the feed-dogs they stayed dropped and I had to take apart the bed plate to reach inside to push them back up so they would engage. It has stitch length, stitch width, and stitch tension dials. I've tried all variations of each. I've read that either it is fantastic or a dud. Apparently Singer no longer makes their machines in the US they have them made in China.

I'm really bummed and hope I can get it fixed or working properly. Being such a new sewer I'm not sure if it is me or the machine, but I was doing well on my Mothers machine.

You shouldn't have any trouble returning it to Amazon. But I would take it to a repairman if one is close by to see if it is minor adjustments needed or not worth the trouble.

annthreecats 11-28-2012 12:32 PM

I received my chiffon and batting today that I ordered from Fabric.com on Black Friday. I think the chiffon was half price and the twin size Quilter's Dream cotton batts were $9.99 each. Unfortunately, that's the only stuff I could buy. I ran out of money. :(

BellaBoo 11-28-2012 12:47 PM

Everything I bought was 50% to 75% off. I don't bother with sales that are less then 50% off for quilting supplies.

Charming 11-28-2012 01:08 PM

Heck ya. It has been looking a lot like Christmas lately for me :D whenever the doorbell rings I jump because I know it is USPS or ups. The biggest was two orders from fatquartershop their Black Friday sale was amazing and I just couldn't resist....went overboard even. Today I got 44 moda charm packs that I bought from yahoo groups and ahhhhhh they look sooooo nice.

Lori S 11-28-2012 01:12 PM

I got one package yesterday and a rather large one today from Quilt in a Day.. such a thrill to open them! Still have one more coming !

Jingle 11-28-2012 01:14 PM

I didn't buy anything, I don't need anything. I have tons of fabrics I am trying to make into quilts.

FancyFoot 11-28-2012 02:48 PM

I got my order today from http://www.honeybegood.com/ . Super fast service, I ordered on cyber monday & got it today.
I also took advantage of the great sale at The Fat Quarter Shop, Beaver Creek Quilt Company & of course Ebay.
:) :) :)

BellaBoo 11-28-2012 02:59 PM

Did you happen to see the Cherrywood Fabric grab bag sale of buy one get one free with free shipping! Their grab bags are cut 7" x 10" rectangles of two yards of different colors of hand dyed suede look fabric. I am excited for that package to arrive.

TexasGurl 11-28-2012 03:11 PM

Have fun opening your goodies !
I didn't order a single quilt-related thing (but I went to the Houston Quilt show here a few wks ago and spent my funds!)

Now THAT is some pretty smart marketing.

nygal 11-28-2012 03:35 PM

I received two today. Headphones, two books and some fabric due here tomorrow and three more quilt books due soon.

Helen S 11-28-2012 04:09 PM

Ok, I guess you could say you've hit upon a pet peeve of mine. lol

My shopping was done before Black Friday and just have to say I fought back and didn't even go out all weekend! Most of the local stores had one or two of something advertised and they were long gone before anyone could get to the stores, anyway. I'm definitely not "Bah Humbug", just don't like the advertising pressure that is put upon people to spend what they don't have or spend what they'd rather not spend.

So, just sayin...

Sometimes we drive by a stranger's house and their garage door is open to reveal boxes upon boxes of STUFF...stuff they haven't used or even seen in many years in most cases, and have no clue as to what is in the boxes. The "stuff" is taking up their parking spaces, so they have to park in the driveway. Do they really need more stuff? I know...what's it to me? Not much, but it fascinates me for some strange reason. lol

And it probably won't be too many more years before we're facing "Black 4th of July" etc. ugh

BellaBoo 11-28-2012 04:41 PM

I drove by a house with open garage that had plastic bins stacked six deep and as high as the carport. I kept wondering what on earth was in all those bins. I stopped one day when a woman was outside the house and just asked her. She said the bins were full of books from a bookstore a relative owned. She said his estate paid for book storage so she made more money storing the books then by selling them. Her brother couldn't stop the storage fee but could profit from the sale of the books. One never knows what story is behind plastic bins. LOL

joyce888 11-28-2012 05:03 PM

I didn't do any Black Friday Christmas shopping but I did buy Windows 8 on Friday at Office Max. On sale for $59 with a $30 maxi rewards and used the $24 in maxi rewards I already had, so it will only cost me $6. Monday I did order the TrueCut rotary blade sharpener from JoAnns using a 50% off coupon so with tax and free shipping $34. Just can't get into the shopping mood.

garysgal 11-28-2012 06:40 PM

you can buy a little plastice thing that fits over the feed dogs so you don't have to lower them. Some machines come with one.
I've had good experience with returning something to Amazon. They even send you a pre-paid mailing label.

Sewnoma 11-28-2012 07:01 PM

I'm getting boxes too, but it's mostly stuff for other people...OH EXCEPT for my lovely new Brother PE770! :D Oh, and a whole boxload of thread, stabilizer, an x-lg hoop, obligatory thread boxes... ;-)

I'd been planning on buying it anyway, and Amazon had a deal I just couldn't resist!

I also bought a pile of stuff for other people...I'm done with my holiday shopping, aside from stocking stuffers! :) (Of course, I still have four more quilts to finish before Christmas, so I'm not READY for the holidays by any means. And now of course I need to make lovely embroidered labels for all of them!)

kathbug 11-29-2012 03:30 AM

I did shopping but I never checked out. That's my way of getting my fabric fix without actually buying anything. If I bought all the carts that I never checked out I don't know where I would put all the fabric!

Debbie C 11-29-2012 05:48 AM

I'm waiting on a clear acrylic office chair to match my all-glass desk....and a couple of little trinkets from Tiffany's for my daughters. I did treat myself to the rotating cutting board that's on Amazon. It hasn't arrived yet either.

:o I do the same thing! However, I couldn't pass up Connecting Thread's Black Friday sale... My box just arrived and it is wonderful! I purchased some fat quarter bundles and thread. I ended up with about 52 fat quarters and 5 spools of thread for around $52. And that was with free shipping, also. But it wasn't all for me - one spool of black thread was for my MIL... :D

sherryellen 11-29-2012 06:13 AM

We hit Joanns Fri morning at six. My daughter volunteers at a shelter and I had made her 2 puppy quilts for an auction which raised 300$ so I just had to take advantage of the flannel sale and went overboard. I now have fabric for 9 more puppy quilts but they won't be started till next year. It's for a very good cause. They rehabilitate abused and broken dogs.

Caswews 11-29-2012 06:33 AM

LOL just waiting on my stuff from a quilting place .. Now I am looking at old magazines and finding new ideas to make bears and bunnies with .. so gonna look for that stuff next .. LOL too bad I didn't find these ideas before black Friday !LOL oh well it is what it is ...

mjhaess 11-29-2012 08:20 AM

I ordered from Connecting threads but have not got my box yet....It is always exciting to be expecting a package...Enjoy your goodies.

Carol34446 11-29-2012 08:30 AM

Josyjatz,
I bought a brother SQ9000 from Overstock and it didn't work when I got it. I let them know and had another machine here in a few days. I finally got the return label for the non-working one and returned it to vendor. Let Amazon know it is not working right and they need to replace it or refund. I got my brother for $139. and new one works great. As we raise dogs, I love not having to use a foot peddle as the dogs tend to chew on cord etc. If they don't replace, check out www.Overstock.com as they have some good buys there. Or look in paper or local shops for a higher quality used machine. Don't give up, you will find what you need. But call or e-mail Amazon right away.
Carol

I didn't buy on black friday sales, but my neighbor and I are going today to a yard sale that looks to be all sewing. Will let you know if I get anything good.

cannyquilter 11-29-2012 10:51 AM

I ordered a package from connecting threads prior to Black Friday and then on Black Friday I ordered a quilt kit. They have arrived at my designated US address and should be getting posted to me this weekend so hoping to get them within the next fortnight. Very excited.

normasews 11-29-2012 11:39 AM

I'm patiently waiting for mine. I'm hoping to receive them in the next couple of days.

I don't have a Singer but when I drop my feed dogs and then want them to go back up, I have to put a scrap of fabric under foot and start sewing then feed dog pops back up. Make sure you look and see if there is a dial of some kind to turn that allows the feed dogs to pop up when you start sewing on your scrap of fabric. Hope that helps!

Does your Singer have a dial to turn off the dropped feed dogs? My machine does but then I have to put a scrap of fabric under the foot and sew a few stitches then the feed dog pops up.

I just finished folding my196 FQ that I bought from Connecting Threads black Friday sale......I went alittle overboard but I really like ther fabric and their sales......they ended up being about $.75 each......it was so much fun playing with the fabric-----and planning the quilts......

wishfulthinking 11-30-2012 05:27 AM

I was good & stayed away from Black Friday. Somehow, Cyber Monday sucked me in though. Just ordered from a couple of places, but so far nothing has even shipped. Bummer! I want packages!

kellen46 11-30-2012 05:30 AM

I just got my order from Marshals dry goods. It was my first time ordering from them, but it won't be my last. I was so pleased with the quality of the fabrics and the price was very reasonable. It will make a nice addition to my stash. The Christmas fabrics are very nice and will go to replenish the predations made on it this season.

Have you sat down with the manual and the machine in front of you and gone through the entire manual for each of the different functions your machine is meant to perform. As to the feed dogs, if this machine works like my Futura 350, once you lower the feed dogs and then raise them again, you have to turn the hand wheel to re-engage the feed dogs. Check the manual to be sure you are threading the top of the machine and the bobbin case properly. Just a few thoughts I've encountered when getting used to a new machine.

Jothesewer 11-30-2012 12:57 PM

I didn't go shopping on Black Friday, had my shopping done by making most of it. This morning I sewed bags from fabric instead of wrapping paper then keep the bags for next year to recycle. I saves a lot of mess and most people don't sew so they don't want the fabric anyway. I still have baking etc. to do

I did not order on line Black Friday. I shoped the black Friday sale at my local Quilt Shop in town.

Well, it lists items for sale by other websites/vendors.
It's the same as when you search for a TV - there are numerous vendors selling the the same model.

Hancocks and numerous smaller shops are included.
AFAIK, though, the actual fulfillment of the orders is always still done at the store level.

Unless it's fixed sizes - like half-yard or yard cuts only - I can't see Amazon being set up for that sort of process.
For now, at least.*
I don't think it has any of the fabric actually in its warehouses - especially fabric cut from the bolt.

Prices advertised on Amazon for a particular item from a particular website/vendor are the same as at the website - including sales.
Here's a the randomly chosen fabric from both sites:
http://www.amazon.com/Hoffman-Batiks...dp/B00885LOSQ/
http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item...6#.ULnCjWcvmvk

In the end, though, I find navigating an individual store's site much easier for finding "like" fabrics and/or trying to coordinate a few.

To Amazon, that specific design half-yard cut of fabric is the same as a TV or blender or book.
I don't think too many people buy 50 TV items at one time. ;-)

*I'm reminded of FavoriteFabrics interesting post a few days ago about Amazon and its sometimes contentious relationship with its 3rd party vendors.
I'd link to it but it seems the thread had been deleted because....who knows.
