I have a machine that came out of my Great Grandmother's house. My Grandmother was going to take it to Goodwill and I took it instead!! I can't believe she was just going to give it away.

I think I have determined that it was manufactured by New Home. I can see where it used to say "New Ideal" on it. It is black and the "golden" embellishments have come off.

It is electrical and has the motor on it and I have the foot pedal.

What confuses me is that it is on a treadle type of iron stand with a wooden table top and it folds down into the table. The table has two drawers on each side and a small fold down type of drawer on the front of the table. There is not a foot treadle on the iron base. I can not find a model number or serial number, I don't even know where to look.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the QB!!! I would love to see a
picture of your machine.

My New Home Ruby has a small number on the back of the slide plate that covers the shuttle area. I was able to determine her age from that.

Welcome from the show me state, looking forward to the pics.

I think you're right, I think the New Ideal is a badged New Home machine.

What you're describing is a treadle cabinet that has had the foot pedal removed, perhaps to make space for the electronic foot feed after the machine was fitted with a motor.

Look on and under the slide plate, behind the pillar, and on the underside of the machine for a serial number.

sounds like a great acquisition

A picture would help, but one idea comes to my mind is, it was probably a treadle to begin with, then someone "electified" it.

Always nice to have a piece of sewing history!!!

glad you found us. This place is a great source of information for old machines. Good for you for rescuing your vintage machine from Goodwill. Cant wait to see the pics.

Does your machine have a belt on the right side to turn the hand wheel? sounds like the cabinet base was neutered. Maybe it was a treadle and it was converted to have a potted motor. Maybe an electric machine was put in the cabinet and some one took off the treadle plate. With a little effort it could be made into a treadle again if the machine has a belt and you can find a plate for the cabinet. Post some pictures. If it runs well you might just keep it ellectric. Nothing wrong with that. She sounds lovely.

Here are some photos of my machine. I did find a number on the slide plate. It appears to say 1850982. Obviously a later model, but I think that dates it around 1900.

You can barely see where the name "New Deal" used to be. All gold is gone:-(

Photos of my machine. Again, I think it dates to 1900. Pretty common. Made by New Home, and it appears to be the New Ideal Brand. What do you think? Any info on it??

Very nice cabinet. I still wonder if it is the original treadle head but a motor was added and the treadle base removed. I have seen more of those. I bet you could revers that if you can find a new base for the cabinet. She looks like fun. Have you taken her for a spin yet?

jratti 10-28-2011 07:51 AM

I have not yet. I think I need to oil her and clean her up a little. I am not that familiar yet with the vintage machines. This is a new hobby for me. I think you are right about the motor/machine added to the base. The base has holes with threads where bolts/screws used to be. I would love to convert it back. I guess I am now on the lookout for those type of things. I need to do more research on how to clean her up. I don't know the best way to go about getting her into looking good. I know that if I try to replace the paint or gold embellishments it will decrease any collectable value. Not that there really is any now. I don't plan on ever getting rid of it or selling it. It is purely of sentimental and decorative value to me.

Thanks for the comments.

I recently got an 1888 Davis machine that was originally in treadle that someone put a funky motor on in the 1930s (most likely from the paper I found with it). Just take the motor off and find a set of irons on eBay or Craigslist. It will happily be a treadle once again!!

Also, go on the Vintage Sewing Machines Virtual Page on here and look for Miriam's list of sources for information on restoring...I just read a lot of those yesterday and tackled my Davis last night with good result. There is a ton of information on the links she provided.

Good luck!! It's a fun project!!!

My grandmother had one similar to this...and there was a treadle across that bar at the bottom. I guess I remember the cabinet more than the machine...but the two drawers on each side, it all brings back memories. No telling what happened to hers...

Yours is beauty!!
