My machine won't turn on!!!!!

What am I going to do??? I worked like crazy on a project last night and when I turned my machine off it was warm. I was trying to machine applique some things - you may have seen another post I wrote about my satin stitching not laying flat. Now today nothing! I have (like everyone else) so many Christmas projects I'm working on! This year we aren't going to have a Christmas for financial reasons so I was trying to use my stash to make some things. I can't afford a repair bill now! I'm sorry for writing this - I just needed a shoulder to cry on. :'(

Oh, I know that last minute rush and no machine! Take a breath, try the old standards: unplug and replug at the plug end (check with another appliance like a lamp to make sure the actual outlet is working, you might have blown a fuse/tripped a breaker). Unplug and replug at the machine, it could have slipped out. I would also check the footpedal to make sure it is connected, no telling what wil spook it. I would also try the footpedal (mash down) to see if it is just not turning on all the lights, etc and might just jog it. Good luck! Linda

Try everything that linda8450 said. It's probably something simple. If all else fails, see if you can borrow a machine from a friend. Good luck.

I had broken wires where the plug went into the sewing machine. I wanted my DH to permanently attach the plug to the wires of the machine but that didn't work so we have it taped tight and I can't take the plug out. Try the wall plug, turn the end over and try it that way in the wall, be sure the light switch is on if that is a wall socket controlled by a light switch, that happens more than you think. If you know someone who knows a bit about electricity, have him use his test light to see if you are getting power to the machine. If the motor had burned out, you would have smelled something like smoke and hot wires. Let us know what you find out.

Oh gosh I am so sorry!! I hope it turns out to be something simple!!!

hperttula123 12-03-2011 11:05 AM

Hope you get it working soon or find someone to borrow a machine from. I would let you borrow one, but your pretty far away. :( Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!!

AnnieF 12-03-2011 11:13 AM

Try looking to see if you tripped a circuit breaker ...I did that once with my machine when my daughter turned on her hair dryer and we discovered we were on the same circuit. I reset the circuit breaker and plugged into another outlet.

QuiltnNan 12-03-2011 11:18 AM

i don't have any additional suggestions... just want to wish you well and hope it is something easy.

TerryQuilter 12-03-2011 02:15 PM

Wish you were closer, I have an extra machine I would let you use. Hope it's just a minor problem, good luck.

Connie M. 12-03-2011 02:23 PM

waiting to hear if you found the cause. I had a problem like that once, and the cord had come undone from the foot control. I, too, would lend you a machine if yiou were closer. Let us know if you find the culprit.

Treasureit 12-03-2011 02:23 PM

Try Goodwill or some thrift store for a cheap one.

Pinkiris 12-03-2011 03:02 PM

If your machine is plugged into an outlet that is in line with a ground fault switch (the ones with the little buttons between the places you plug in) try resetting the switch. My Dad used to trip the switch by bumping it, and then wonder why none of the outlets in his kitchen worked. Hope that your problem is as easily solved! Please let us know--We care!

amyjo 12-03-2011 03:07 PM

sure hope your machine is working again. Prayers that it quits being so stubborn when you need to get things done.

Sandra in Minnesota 12-03-2011 04:14 PM

Hope you find the problem.

BellaBoo 12-03-2011 04:46 PM

Oh, if only we lived a few a hours away. I would lend you a machine for as long as you needed it. Go to all the thrift stores and post you need a working sewing machine onhttp://www.freecycle.org/ it's amazing what people give away on that site. I have given away so many things I don't need anymore on that site. Someone even came and took my old tv for parts.

KerryK 12-03-2011 05:27 PM

Any news yet? I hope it is fixed and you are busy as can be!

deedum 12-03-2011 05:54 PM

I hear you! Mine went into the shop 2 weeks ago, and I just found out it is going to cost me several hundred dollars to fix it. Main drive shaft went out of it, didn't even know a machine had a drive shaft. I really can't buy another machine, so I am just getting this fixed and hope it doesn't give me anymore problems. Yea, if you lived closed you could use one of my old vintage machines. They keep going!

Glenda m 12-03-2011 06:16 PM

Hope you find the problem and get to sewing again. Good luck!!

You are NEVER going to believe this!!! I'm standing right here and I don't believe it!!! My daughter and son-in-law just walked in from being on a "date" and came to visit me and I told them what had happened to my machine and how upset I was about it. As she was telling me how sorry she was she walked over and TURNED IT ON!!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I started screaming for my 18 year old son to come in and see what had just happened. He ran in so fast - I think he thought someone had broken into our home or something! :) He was with me earlier in the day when I couldn't get it working, so I told him what my daughter had just done and we all busted out laughing!!! What the?!?!?!? None of us can figure out why it's working now other than my prayers were answered! Even though my day was wasted because I didn't get the sewing done I had planned, it turned out ok because we all got a good laugh!!! Aaahhh . . . what a relief!!! :) Thank you all for the great advice and sympathy you gave me today! It's good to know I have so many "friends" who care!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! :)

BellaBoo 12-04-2011 01:28 PM

I'm so happy for you! I bet there is a short in the off on switch. It should be easy to get fixed. In the mean time don't turn it off just unplug from the wall socket.

Pinkiris 12-04-2011 01:39 PM

HOORAY!!! Now start sewing!!:)

athomenow 12-04-2011 01:43 PM

Sometimes our faith gets tested and then voila all better! Machines are funny that way. Maybe it needed a long rest from all the sewing. So glad it's running for you. Stop before it gets warm again!

michelehuston 12-04-2011 02:31 PM

I am so glad to hear that your machine magically fixed itself!!! It will be a good Christmas!!!

snipforfun 12-04-2011 08:44 PM

I bet you overheated it with all that satin stitching. Same thing happened to me a few years ago. It just needed a rest and to cool off! Its a safety feature.

mimiknoxtaylor 12-05-2011 05:24 AM

Miracles do happen! I felt so bad when I read your 1st post because I could give you a machine - but you really are too far from me. Blessings & Merry Christmas

Marni 12-05-2011 05:26 AM

Hoping it's a minor problem and is easily fixed

LoriMcc 12-05-2011 05:29 AM

Prayer always works, just not always the way we anticipate! Hugs to you!!

damaquilts 12-05-2011 06:00 AM

I am sure the other poster was right. It Overheated and needed to cool off, thats all . I have had things to that before. I would watch it from now on and if it starts getting warm stop and let it cool down. Then after things get better moneywise start looking in thrift stores etc. And definately put an ad on freecycle. When I moved I gave away about a dozen machines. Not all worked but I needed them gone fast.I even freecycled one after I got here.

sahm4605 12-05-2011 06:07 AM

OH NO!!!! that is awful. say a prayer and as my hubby says "check for paper in the tray" there is nothing to make you feel more stupid or relived than to find that the plug was out or that it was unplugged. hubby is bad about doing that to me.

GABBYABBY 12-05-2011 06:24 AM

If you lived any where near me I can loan you a machine until after Christmas.

sewtruterry 12-05-2011 06:31 AM

You never told us what brand and model of machine that you are using but it may be that it is overheating as you mentioned that it was quite warm. There are some machines out there that will shut down when they have been overheated. So the advise right now is slow and steady but take some breaks and shut down and let it cool off.

maryp 12-05-2011 06:36 AM

i would loan u one of mine but your to far away hope u get it working mary min ms.

AnnT 12-05-2011 06:43 AM

When mine did that, it was the foot pedal. I have 2 machines (both Brothers) and one foot pedal fit the other so I switched it out at my son's suggestion I do that when I was talking to him about my unhappiness with my machine, and kept going.

Caswews 12-05-2011 07:16 AM

YIKES !! sounds like its time for the sewing machine dr !

jaciqltznok 12-05-2011 07:28 AM

check the plug and wiring anyway...those things just don't happen so that we can clean all day...hehehe
glad it is ON now though!

Exactly what I think, too!

JoanneS 12-05-2011 09:19 AM

I'm so happpy for you! I was getting sadder and sadder reading all the suggestions and beginning to think that you were in for an expensive fix!!!! Now we don't even have to worry about what was wrong!

JudeWill 12-05-2011 11:45 AM

I just opened this thread. I was wishing we were neighbors so I could loan you mine & then I read that it is working. HOORAY! It must have just been overheated and wanted a break. What an awful time for a machine to go out. So glad it is working again. Now you can have a Merry Christmas!

Fabriholic 12-05-2011 02:48 PM

Just happy to hear that it is back in working order. Anxiety levels do tend to elevate fairly quickly this time of year! Glad to hear you laughed afterwards.

1. Try plugging into another socket.
2. While it is possible that your switch is bad, more likely it is just the foot pedal. Depending on your machine, this can vary from $19 to about $95. Most dealers or repair places have one in stock that will fit your machine.
3. Could be the switch. If this is the case, try switching it a bunch of times to get it ON. Then plug the machine into a surge protector with a switch. Tape the switch on your machine so that you don't accidentally turn it off. Then use the surge protector to switch your machine on and off. I had to do this for 4 months once with a computer monitor - we were just waiting for a good sale to get the current flat screen type and get rid of the huge, mongo screen forever.
4. Consider creating an emergency fund for sewing machine repair. I have two such emergency funds - one for sewing machine repair and one for vet emergencies. Eventually, you KNOW you will have to use the fund!
