I love these little cuties, they fit under my elbow and on my shoulder. Filled with rice and easy to make. Last night, I had enough so warmed these rascals up and placed them on my shoulder and elbow. Felt soooooo good. Just need to figure out one to go around my neck like a sleeping pillow . Does anyone else use these. They stayed warm a while too, surprised me.
I need one of those quilting things that we wear and it has a "weighted" bag for our posture. I tend to bend while I sew . Looking forward to more ideas on what we can us to sew longer with less stiffness and aches and pains. |
Those are so cute. I love your butterfly fabric.
those are cute!Let's see, hip, knee, ankle, neck, shoulder, hmmmmm. LOL
We love rice bags in our family. Everyone has them. One year I made them for presents. We have small ones that we warm up before leaving the house and they act like hand warmers in your pockets. I also made neck ones. I made a bigger one that my husband uses when his back is hurting. I make them out of bamboo velor for extra softness. They are great to warm up your toes. They are very therapeutic to use.

ugh, I need one for my neck and shoulders today....lots of pain :( Great idea, might have to make me one. :)
Just wondering if you took one of those thera wraps made for your neck and made a pattern from it's shape and extend it so you could Velcro it together, making a pouch area just in the back for the rice. I make little heat beds for my Chinese Cresteds. The poor hairless one loves his all year long.
They work. I have a bigger one that has lavendar scent in it too, relaxing.
Clem 55 - you are too funny. We need one for every joint, dont' we? ROFL. Great idea for keeping warm. My DH is always, always cold because of his heart meds, so making him a few for his pockets. Velcro works too. Joann's sells a whole line of these quilty bags and they have velcro, Need to add those while I am sewing them. Another great idea. I love sharing on this board. SO many ideas. :D  |
Love the rice packs.......easy to make......and I put two in microwave for 2 minutes for a good heat :D
Love my rice bags!! I warm them in the microwave before I go to bed and then throw them in the bed where my feet are. No more trying to get my husband to warm my feet!!
My MIL used a sailor collar pattern to make one for her neck and shoulders. Just made it fuller wider and filled it up with rice. She loves it.
My sis was given a whole set made with old t-shirts, but they were filled with untreated "deer corn"... I'm a town-girl, married to a town-boy, so I'm not exactly certain what "deer corn" is, but I think it's what hunters buy to put in their deer stands? She shared with me on a trip once and they are wonderful!! When we'd stop for fuel, we'd heat them up in the store's microwave... wonderful for stiff necks, hips, knees, whatever!! She also uses them to warm her toes when she goes to bed... oh yeah...
Yes, I use them! They are great! Around the neck, in the pocket, or at my feet in bed at night. :)
I use them for neck all the time !!
made 18 of these for xmas (along with 18 mug rugs and 18 headache masks). made muslin bags filled with flax seeds then pillowcases for each one (using the Missouri Quilt Co. you tube video). the warmer is heated separately, then dropped into its pillowcase. The cases get washed with the weekly laundry. everyone loved them. warmed their feet at bedtime. my sister borrowed her husband's and son's warmers to use for her aches and pains so I made her several more for her back, neck and knees.

We have made neck bags using cherry pits or corn.
I used an old knee sock, clean of course, and fill it with rice, tie a knot in the end, put it in the microwave for 45 seconds then drape around your neck. Instant warmth and pain relief.

One of my Patchwork class ladies is semi crippled with a Arthritic back and hips so I made her a oblong cushion, out of flannel bits n pieces and added a big pocket, then popped in a Orthopedic Ice bag, a bag of frozen peas will do the same, and placed it behind her when sitting on an upright chair. After 20 - 30 mins I replaced it with a warm Lavender scented wheat bag, the relief she got was immense, I think she loves me now ;)
For shoulder tension try putting a cold pack on first, for just 20 minutes or so and then use your warm wheat bag, you will really get a whole lot of benefit, don't ask me how I know, Signed a Cuff Tendinitis sufferer :( |
OK just showing my ignorance lol do you use just regular rice? Thanks cheryl :D
I have several that I found at a craft sale. They are filled with herbs/rice and smell wonderful when heated. Really do the trick and so relaxing.
I love these bags and use mine a lot. To keep them in place on your back or arm, you can sew straps into the side seams with velcro on the ends to secure them.
When you have any aches or pains, I KNOW it feels so great with heat, but the advice from all doctors is ICE. Should we make pretty ICE bags? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr, but it works!!!!
I have several of these. I take one to bed with me in order to warm my feet at night. I also have one that goes over my head and warms my shoulders. Love them.
The bags can be put in the freezer when you need a cold pack. Just slip it into a plastic bag first.
They used to use these on the mother/baby floor at the hospital. Until someone got burnt ( BE CAREFUL !!!!!).
They used a tube sock. I have a grandson as a baby had alot of tummy problems, so i made one for him out of rice. would put it on my lap then lay a towel over it then lay him over it with his tummy down. It helped it alot. |
You can make the neck bags as well. Just google to find the pattern. Remember to add extra for the seam allowance. The one I found on line a while back was too small so I added extra for the seam allowance. Fit like a glove.

My friend has one shaped like a cat but she complains that it is too small so I have to make a longer one for her. The body is a rectangle, made with a couple of prints. Small rectangles are the four paws and tail. The head is a circle, stuffed and sewn on,with added ears and embroidered features. I plan to use rice in the body. I was wondering how to avoid a fire in the microwave and a removable rice sack sounds like a good idea!
I have used these forever it seems. Now my chiropractor says do not use heat.........use ice. But, the heat feels soooo good!
Wow, thanks ladies! I made long rice bags to place on the quilt top when I have "extra" fabric that needs quilting out, but I had NO IDEA I could heat it and use it for sore muscles! My husband has neck problems and I am going to make him one TODAY! Thank you so very much!

BTW a few of the well know quilters, in their books, often say taking a glass of wine before starting to FMQ as it relaxes you, but I do suggest you limit you intake to a moderate level |
Hey, If you get directions for a posture pillow, please let me know. My posture is gettin really bad, can't stop this quilting urge. Really need something to help straighten me back up.
I also make what I call warmie bags. I use them a lot in the winter. I toss a couple of them in the bottom of me bed to warm the sheets before I get in. I like to make them for elderly people who seem to be very cold in the winter. I use deer corn to fill the bags. It doesn't pop and holds the heat for a long time.
I use the rice bags all the time. Heat one for my neck and also lower back as have had so many injuries in those areas they are the first to suffer with the cold. I keep one in my freezer in a freezer bag for injuries. They are the best invented things since sliced bread. :)
OK guys,I need to know is it just plain dry rice?My DH has fibromyalgia would these be good for him?
Love the rice bags! I don't understand what the weighted thing for our posture is. Could someone explain this please. My posture is awful when I am sewing, I could sure use something to help. I have never heard of this. I just wait till I hurt and use the rice bags but if there is a way to avoid hurting in the first place I would love to know about it.
Thanks |
Beauty Control representives sell a U shape bag for this purpose for the neck. Just google Beauty Control

I've made hundred and sold at craft sales. Since I'm not doing it any long I'll tell you my secret. Like yours, I use rice but I also line mine with WnN and that keeps it warm even longer and cold longer too. Since these can't be put in the washing machine ( imagine the look of the machine....... ) I also made a little "pillow case" to go over it and that can be thrown into the wash. Very popular and even though I haven't done any sale for a year, people still call to have me make more.
Wow - so many great ideas. ANd I do know about the ice too. I have a regular ice bag like the old fashioned ones we get at the pharmacy. It definitely helps with the inflammation. The the heat. I also freeze mine. I made small pillowcases like the ones for the traveling size, and I keep those blue ice packs in the freezer, and put them in a pillow case and use them too. Last night arouns 4am I was on the couch with ice bags on my elbows and knees and heat pillows everywhere else.....DH comes in and asks if I can't make up my mind which I want. ROFL. Love all the comments and sharing. WIll keep watching.
And the Back for posture is sold in LQS and Joann's. You wear it like a "back pack" basically but the pack is on the center of the middle back and it is weighted so you tend to sit straight. May just buy one with a coupon. Everyone wears them at retreats so they must be good. Maybe someone can find a picture and post it on here. Thank you. |
When I asked the nursing home if they could use lap quilts, I was told they really needed more rice bags (they do the filling) and walker bags. Guess that will be my next project for a while. Have odds and ends of older material that I can use. Am tired of seeing some of it still in the drawers. The pattern has lost it's appeal. Does that happen to you?
