Hello,

Has anyone made a quilt from neckties?? One of my bosses has been collecting ties for many years and has about 200. He asked if it was possible to make a quilt out of them. I told him it was. I thought he would forget about our conversation. But he brought 5 boxes of neckties into the office and told someone that I was going to make a quilt out of them. I didn't have the heart to tell him that my project list runs to about 2015!! But, if there is a fairly easy pattern or method, maybe I could squeeze him on the list and get one done in the next couple of years!!

There is a quilt book out there called "Daddy's Ties" I don't recall the author but I bet it would be a big help. It is harder to work with ties since everything is on the bias and stretches. Hope you are successful in squeezing him in but it is certainly alot to ask. Hope he is paying you.

the link is pictures maybe that will help. I saw a picture of one somewhere, the ties were cut and made a dresden plate quilt.

I haven't made an entire quilt, but I have made a pillow using ties. My 2 SILs and I and my DD made them out of my FILs ties after he died. We made them in a crazy quilt style and added a few decorative stitches. We used a foundation piece of muslin underneath. Some were tough to work with... they were silky and stretched a lot. It was fun, but work! Barb C

A sting quilt qould be perfect for neckties. They are already cut for that. Also, men usually like stronger graphics that can be mad by string method. And they are easy!

I have seen two beautiful necktie quilts made by a quilting friend. She used the log cabin pattern on one and courthouse steps on the other. She said the log cabin was the easier. Both were gorgeous! She did not wash the ties but took them apart, used the knit interfacing on the back and then cut out the pieces. Maybe your boss would be satisfied with a wall hanging or a lap quilt. I doubt that he realizes the amount of work with this project just to get ready. I saved my dad's neckties and just discovered that they are all polyester. Yuk! not as pretty as silk but I am going to give it a try.

I haven't made a quilt from neckties, but I did use them once to make a wall hanging of a turkey for my principal's office at Thanksgiving. Used the ties to fan out and make the tail. I just appliqued them onto muslin. I used a clip art turkey (enlarged) to make the body of the bird and then appliqued pumpkings and fall leaves around the bottom. It turned out pretty cutel

I will add a pictire of a tie quilt that my sister made for one of her customers (if I can attach the picture that is). I am not sure exactually how she did this but if your interested I can ask her for more details.
