Need advice on baby quilt
 

I am making a baby quilt, I haven't made many quilts. Only have made baby size ones. Anyway, I was wondering if it is better to put flannel on the back of them or the cotton. The front is made of a panel that was for a book but I thought it would make a cute quilt. Advice or suggestions appreciated.

I have made a number of baby quilts backed with flannel. Some are still being used by my grandchildren, and the oldest grandchild is 6! One caution is that flannel will probably shrink more than the cotton top. Another thing that I have done is replacing the batting and back with fleece. That makes a nice warm, fuzzy quilt. You do have to be careful with the stretchiness of the fleece.

I think either would be fine. I also know some people use Minkee on their baby quilts' backs. I've never used it but I hear good things about it.

I think it would depend upon what warmth you wanted the quilt to have. What primary use the quilt will have. Will it be used in a warm house to lie lightly over a baby?
Will it be used to wrap up a baby going outside in a cold climate? Will it be used to put on the floor for the baby to lie on top of, to play on? Going into a house with good central heating and no drafts might be different than going into a house with room heaters and drafty areas. Going outside with the baby in the South is totally different than going outside with the baby in the North.

Flannel is totally acceptable to use for a quilt backing. However, the shrink factor that another member mentioned is soooo important. You need to prewash it (not in cold water) at least once, I recommend twice, before you apply it to your quilt top.

I have used cotton on both sides or flannel or minkee on the back. I always wash (in hot or warm) before I cut so the shrinking should not (and has not) been a problem.
