Ok so I recently got the paper doll fabric in the mail, I went to Joann's today and picked out a few fabrics that I liked to go along with them. I have a pattern in my mind but here is my delima!

I am wanting to make a quilt SIMILAR to this,

BUT these are the fabric that I chose plus a cream colored fabric that I am going to use to make the doll blocks with,

I have all 19 dolls which I would like to make 19 blocks out of and then I would like to make the 20th block (so it is symmetrical I am kinda ocd about it) into a "closet" for the clothes and toys using the wood grain fabric. I would like to use to stripe fabric as the sashing and use the pink and yellow to make pin wheels instead of the little blocks or leave the blocks out all together. Then I know for sure I want the outside border to be pink and yellow pinwheels instead of a normal fabric border! then the binding will be the stripes!

SO.....after all that is said, when I am using stripes to make sashing which direction should the lines go? do they all go one way? or do I cut them all one way and then just piece them on top, bottom, left, right with some being vert. and some being horiz.

Help!!! PLEASE. I have only ever used stripes ONCE and it was for binding!

You need opinions from someone much more creative than I am, but I think if I were doing it I'd have to have the horizontal sashings with horizontal stripes and the vertical sashings with vertical stripes.

I love your idea for a closet! Very clever. I would have to have a symetrical layout, too. That's just how my brain works.

I have used a stripe look (a brick pattern fabric) in sashing. I used cornerstones. I cut the fabric so the stipes were all going the long way of cut strip. So when the quilt was pieced because across stripes looked horizontal and the up down stripes were vertical with the cornerstones to break them up it looked kind of like lattice work. Hope this explanation makes sense.

I have also used stripes in inner borders and had them running the short way and that looked really good too. But again on the sides the stripes were horizontal and on the top and bottom they ran vertical. Think piano key border.

Stripes look really great cut on the bias.

You could make a pocket with a velcro closure or zippered one, out of the wood grained fabric to hold all of the pieces. The front of the pocket could have simple line vertically, down the center, embroidered on it, to look like it is 2 closet doors and 2 very small buttons, appliqued pieces, or draw, embroider on the 2 knobs.

If you put the stripes length wise on the vertical ones and going across horizontally on the horizontal ones...that would imitate the wood grain the way it would look naturally.
Going the opposite directions, would give it a more contemporary look.

They would look really wonderful cut on the bias for the binding!
