I need to make hour glass quilt blocks, which will end up as 3.5". The pattern I'm using is not very clear. I need to know what size the squares need to be to end up as 3.5". I found instructions for the 6.5" size; you start off with 7.5" squares. any help will be appreciated.

so try a sample with 4.5 to start

Couple of different layouts for the HOUR GLASS block:
Is this your version? http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2010/...-tutorial.html It is basically a QST (Quarter Square Triangle) block set on point. The exact formula is to start with 2 squares that are 1.25" larger than the size of your FINISHED block size. I'd go with adding 1.5" and then trim down. Way easier. So if you want to end up with 3.5" FINISHED blocks, then you need to start with two 5" squares and use the method in the above link. Then trim down to 4" UNFINISHED. |
the blocks need to be 3.5" unfinished. So, maybe I should do 4.5" squares? or 4.75"? I just don't want to waste a lot of fabrics.

Starting with a 5" sq will allow you to square up to 3.5" with very little waste. The formula says 4.75" but my seams aren't perfect so I allow a little extra for that reason--once they are squared up they go together easily.

Ok, then I'll try a 5" square. thanks for everyone's help.
|
So if you want QST 3" FINISHED, then starting with squares 4.5" (or larger) will allow you to trim down to perfect 3.5" UNFINISHED blocks.

Exactly.
