I need opinions and help please. I had started my daughter's drill team t-shirt quilt last year, but stopped it because I didn't know what I was doing. This is one of the reasons I started quilting lessons, so I could do it the right way.

Well, when I started cutting up the shirts, they came out all different sizes. So then, I read to use fusible tricot to stablize them. So I did and have them all cut out, but are still different sizes.

I came up with now cutting same size black squares and putting t-shirt cut-out on black square. But my delimma is: the t-shirts have the fusible tricot on the back of all of them now. How do I put them on the fabic square?

I so appreciate any and all ideas and thoughts on this. I really want this to come out cute for my daughter. She has wanted this quilt for so long, and insists that "I" do it.

(The school colors are black and gold. My thoughts were putting on black, do sashing with gold and then border with maybe gold and black patch strips. I have gold, white and black floral print for backing. It's her, very bold.)

Just a thought --- you could sash the t-shirt squares with your black fabric instead of applying the t-shirt blocks to black squares. You could adjust the width of the sashing to accomodate the difference in the sizes of the t-shirt blocks. Then you could add your gold fabric as a second sash.

I make alot of T-shirt quilts and love when the pieces are NOT all the same size....it adds character to the quilt, in my opinion.

If you don't have a place to lay out all of the pieces.....get some graph paper! I cut out pieces to replicate the T-shirt squares (and/or rectangles). I keep it simple and use 1 square of the graph paper to equal one inch of the square.

Next, I arrange them on a full piece of graph paper, leaving some space between them, so they are attractive to me (like putting pieces of a puzzle together!).

Now count the squares between your pieces and they will tell you how much fabric you need to join the pieces together. (if you have 2 squares between the pieces you need to cut a strip that is 2 1/2 inches wide to get a 2 inch finished "sashing").

I really love how you do the shadow on your t-shirt quilts! I may 'steal' your idea.

I would strip the shirts to make them all the same size.

Wow, some great ideas. I do love the shadowing effect. I see that this is just not gonna be a fast easy process. I'm gonna have to use my brain a little.

I use peoples clothing,ties,logos on hats,buttons from the clothing,tie labels,pics,letters people have written to the recipient of the quilt,the skys the limit.
