Hello,
I would like to learn how to make a proper tote bag,
the one I have made are flat, can't seem to figure out
how to cut the fabric, so when You open it up
it extends outward,I have them posted on my flickr pg on my profile pg.
If You like to see how I have done them,
I would like to some how find a paper pattern to correcty
do it right, I do all my work by hand.
any help would be super :D

If I understand what you are asking you want your bag to have some front to back depth. That is usually done by making a boxed corner. This website has lots of patterns to look through.

Olga,

Hi Olga, if you google 'tote bag with boxed corners' or 'tote bag with a flat bottom', you will find tutorials that explain this. I also made a tutorial about this for MadamSew.com. Here is the link: https://madamsew.com/blogs/sewing-bl...e-bag-tutorial Hope this helps. Good luck!

These are all from Missouri Star Quilts. These have box corners. I make them to use as purses. The one I made, I put a flap on it to hold it closed for more of a purse look. (see picture in my next post) You can adjust patterns to make different sizes as well.

Here is one that is more shopping bag size - you can put a zipper in it or not.

and here are some that are more purse tote size - you can use charm squares or jelly rolls or even just use yardage

Here is one of the totes I made that I use as a purse.

I used yardage as I made this purse tote using a video from above, the charm square one if I remember correctly. (using yardage instead of charm squares). It has box corners.

I'm currently working on a watermelon tote for DD. I used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-bCfpvhS24 , a video explaining how to recess a zipper. However, she waited til the end to attach handle straps. I insert them when stitching seam for zipper tabs to main bag.
