Need help with tied quilts question
 

I made 4 quilts that were tied by ladies at church a few months ago and they need more ties in them. I have set a goal to deliver them to Ronald McDonald House by Aug. 1 along with 4 other quilts. I'm thinking to do more quilting on them with the machine now that I have a Juki with a larger throat.

My options are (as I see them)

1. Add more ties - problem with this is that I don't have a place to do it other than sitting at the sewing table. We have a cat and I want to keep them away from any place that she sits so I don't get cat hair or dander on them.

2. Remove the ties and just quilt by machine - I'm concerned about leaving holes in the fabric. I will be laundering them before taking them to RMH

3. Leave the ties and add machine quilting - would that be tacky?

Thoughts? Other ideas? 2 photos attached but there are 4 quilts.

I think they look sweet just like they are. I wouldn't do anything more to them. Someone took a lot of time tying each of the quilts. It would be a shame to change them. Whoever gets them won't know the difference. Kind of like the old way of tying a quilt. I would like to see that come back in style a little. It is so sweet!

I guess my question would be WHY do you think it needs more.....wash them, and then and only then judge.

I am concerned that the ties are not close enough. They are about 5-6 inches apart and the batting instructions say up quilting should be up to 3.5 inches. If the distance between ties is ok, I'm just going leave them as is and trim the ties, wash em, and get em delivered!

We make loads of quilts this way for out Missionary Group and give them away. They look fine to me. We have done some that are about every 7 inches and have never had a problem
Leave them as they are and get them over to R McD House. They will love them

it all depends on the batting requirements and it sounds like you need to do more ties. you could do some machine stitching on the rail fence one and leave in the ties too. good luck!!!

If the batting says that quilting lines should be only 3.5" apart, then you do need to follow those instructions. I think it would be fine to add some quilting to the quilts, but I wouldn't take out the ties (mostly because the ladies at the church put them there). And next time I would choose a batting that allows the quilting to be further apart.

But how do you know that there's never a problem down the road, after the quilts have been washed a zillion times?

Maybe tell the ladies at church that you didn't read the instructions on the batting carefully and they need more ties -
then ask for volunteers to help you put some more ties in them?

Make it sound like you goofed and will they help you out, please?

You can leave the ties and add machine stitching. I just made a quilt that I machine quilted in the ditch around the big squares and then tied in the middle. It looked just fine, and my quilt class teacher approved.
