Need opinions on what to do
 

In my brilliance, I got my children and 2 nieces to trace their hand prints onto freezer paper. My idea (at the time) was to make a lap quilt for my mom for Christmas. Well, that was over 2 months ago and I have yet to even think about the project until now. Now I need help figuring out a quilt that can be done in 25 hours or less using the hand prints. There are 5 grandchildren. Anyone have any ideas? TIA

You need to get it off the freezer paper and onto muslin or a muted colored fabric. You could lay it out in a 3x3 grid with some other large floral fabric, put sashing in between the 9 blocks, put a border on it, embroider their names near their handprints. Lots of possibilities!

This is what I would do, too...especially with your time constraints.

trace the hand prints onto the paper side of Wonder Under and then cut out a piece of fabric and attach the wonder under to it. Cut out the hand print and then you can adhere the hand print to a block and place the block in a quilt.

I made one for my mother with all her kids and grandkids handprints on it. I'll see if I can find the picture and post it.

frugalfabics-your quilt is beautiful, thanks for sharing it, it gives me another idea.

I would make a cape/ruana (large rectangle, fold in half at shoulder line, now split up the center for the 'front', fringe both bottom edges, front and back) from a solid color fleece... be generous in size, skimpy would destroy the look...now cut handprints from contrasting fleece that has wonderunder already applied on the first side. (no raveling) now press on according to the wonderunder instructions. (be sure to use pressing cloth and THEN while warm, brush handprint [and all 'pressed' areas] with a soft baby brush to bring up the nap again WHILE WARM...do not let cool, it will stay flat) I would put the hand prints above the fringe at first, and then 'walk them up' the sides if you have more than the borders will hold...the good thing is that more handprints could be added later, if the occasion arises. Turn the direction back and forth and vary angles...no matching this way.

the other thing, if this doesn't suit...make a tote bag, outside and lining, with the fleece, iron on handprints. The tote might need to be stiffened with lightweight canvas between the layers. If using the stiffener, sew all three layers together, then put seams on the outside, now open the seam and trim away all the stiffener and then close the seam again to hide...if ANY stiffener color shows...use a coordinating sharpie to 'stain' so it won't... if the seams need to be trimmed at this time, consider a pinking sheer, pinking rotary blade or fancy scissor... use the same pressing techniques for the handprints, as above...she will carry it forever! (and if you like, the laprobe is still do-able...large square, bordering prints, fringe to finish...done)

I was thinking of maybe doing something like this:

I would do the following changes:
Use five colors for the stripes (5 kids)
The left side would be a little wider with the hand prints appliqued
The vertical would say "Family"
To the right of the vertical I would put each child's name (appliqued)

Any thoughts, comments, concerns about this idea?

I like the applique idea- and should be fast and easy

I've seen them arranges as flowers. thistle heads and trees, with the hands acting as leaves - many possibilities. You could arrange them in a heart shape if you wanted - I suggest you just play with them until you find a pleasing arrangement.

My initial suggestion was going to be not to concentrate on 'perfect' for this one. Which would be ok with kids hand prints. But reading backwards before posting my comments (better idea is to read forward:o ) I like your plan to modify the quilt you posted. I think it's very doable in the time limit you set. No seam matching and just the applique. If you have a machine for embroidery, that would help. If not, do you know someone who does?

No, I don't have an embroidery machine and I don't know anyone who does. However, I just learned how to cut fabric on my Cricut. :thumbup:
