Need Technique or Advice
I'm machine appliqueing dark gray on dark purple (I know, stupid choices, but...) I'm using beige thread in order to make the dark gray outline stand out and am having difficulty following the gray edge. My blanket stitch is not on the edge and looks awful. I tried putting white chalk on the edge of the gray to help 'see' my way, but that isn't working either. Before I start and rip again I thought someone on this board has probably been there and done that and could offer ideas.

I would suggest a magnifying lamp. I have found it to be worth it's weight in gold when topstitching or decorative stitching. I have a floor one and one that clamps on the machine. I like them both.
http://lee-scraftsandgifts.ecrater.c...hine-magnifier The light isn't worth turning on but the lens is just right. http://www.walmart.com/ip/15408046?a...l5=pla&veh=sem |
I've done quite a bit of same color on same color blanket stitch applique. I have one of those bright lite stick on lights and I aim it so it helps show up the edge. The other thing is don't try and do it at night no matter what kind of lighting you have, it's just not as good as daylight.

Thank you for your advice. It's a new day and as soon as the sun comes up I'm going to tackle it again. You're both definitely right about proper lighting. Appreciate your help.

If you have an open toe foot that also helps.

Isn't it great how many ideas we share on this board?! I have learned so much since I joined. |
I'm guessing from your last post it was the lighting that was the problem? I bet the shadows were something terrible. You wouldn't think a little applique piece would throw a shadow but when you are talking about a thread width and getting right next to it well that can be tricky

Lighting is probably the biggest issue, but the open toe foot will help too. Lots of twists and turns which are hard to 'forsee'. The sun is out and the plan is more light, open toe foot, white chalk on edge, tear away stabilizer and the hardest part - PATIENCE! LOL thanks for the support - this board is the best
