New and need help with block size
 

Hello! Im so glad I stumbled across this forum! I am a beginning quilter and am making a quilt for my daughter. Its not my first one but first with different eize blocks. My plan is to make the quilt with 3 different fabrics and id like it slightly larger than a regularly twin size quilt. So by my math it will come out to 14 12x12 squares of eqch fabric. But id like to do the squares in different sizes using multiples of 3. So i was wondering what size squares you would use? I wqs thinking of doing a 24x24 block, 12x24 rectangles, 12x12 blocks and some 6x6 blocks in each fabric. Would the 24x24 block be too big for a twin size quilt? There would be 3 of those size and then the other sizes. I dont want to go any smaller than 6 inchs and i dont have a ton of money to buy more quilting squares. Suggestions and input greatly appreciated!

try using a sheet of graph paper & sketching out your layout-with your 24" blocks---see if you find it pleasing & balanced...3 (24") blocks in a twin sized quilt doesn't seem as if it would leave much room for any other blocks-but it would probably depend on the blocks themselves...start with graph paper & play with it til you get what pleases you & have fun-
you can print off free sheets of graph paper from the internet.

don't forget to add in the seam allowances. remember that if you are putting a 24" block next to 2-12" blocks, you would have to add 1/2" to the 12" blocks to allow for the seam allowances.

First, thank you for the responses! I looked at my quilting squared and had a duh! moment. It's 8.5 x 8.5 Soooo, Now I had to redo all of my math! I actually need 33 8x8 squares of each fabric (not including seam allowance). So, If I do 4 16x16, 14 8x8 and 6 4x4 blocks of each color and hope for the best. I'm not doing any sashing, but am thinking of adding a thin border around the fabric. What stinks is now I may be just a little short on fabric since my blocks are now smaller. Hopefully I will have enough of the fabric. My backing is 6 yards of minky dot so I'm not sure if I will be using bating or not for this one. If all goes well, I'll be making a second quilt the same way in different fabric for my other daughter. Any thoughts on the above blocks? Suggestions? I would really appreciate it! Thanks
