I am looking for the New Orleans Puzzle QUILT pattern. I have made the table topper and would like to do full quilt. Saw one this week in a store and it is a must do.

patricej 12-15-2007 11:48 AM

Kitty sent me this link to show us what she's looking for:

when i googled it yesterday, i found this photo of a table topper made from the New Orleans Puzzle. if you look very closely, you can see how it's constructed.

i haven't found a pattern for a whole quilt top. i guess i'll add that to my list of things to do. just what i need. a longer list!

I FOUND THE PATTERN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The name of the pattern is Star Spin Quuilt and you can find the pattern at quiltbooksusa.com.

fabricluvr 12-16-2007 05:34 AM

wow! that is beautiful . . . and so tempting. i wonder if it is harder than it looks? looks like strip sets cut at 45 degree angles.

patricej 12-16-2007 05:59 AM

that's all it seams to be. (sorry. i couldn't resist. )

going beyond the table topper to a complete quilt will take some careful calculations, though, i think. but - Boy Howdy! - would it be worth the trouble!!! :!:

That is a pattern I have tried to find for 2 years now.. I love it.. Thanks so much for the info.. I love the Star Spin.. I did check to see what a finished one would cost me and they wanted $2400.00... No way I could afford that...

joy 12-16-2007 06:57 PM

and I am sure your spelling is accurate Patrice !!! You are extra bright to-day...

joy 12-16-2007 07:14 PM

you wrote that you made the new orleans table topper quilt. I have a pattern and am having trouble getting everything to fit. Is there a trick?

I love this quilt...I've said several times that someday I'd like to make one...I'm not there yet with my skill set...so it will have to wait for me!!

What a great pattern! I am simply going to have to buy that book!!!

I wonder how she is getting around the copyright laws to sell these quilts. Anyone know?

lyndawn 02-05-2009 07:31 AM

I saw a quilt like that in a small Amish Country store. I asked and they had one pattern left. I bought it a while back, but I haven't made one yet. It is one of those where I want the Perfect fabrics, I I don't have them yet:)

I saw that quilt and fell in love with it so I ordered the pattern. You know where the pattern is? In my room waiting to be made.
It sure is a scarey pattern!!

Mary quite contrary made the Spin Star and has a picture of hers as her avatar. Here is the link to her Spin Star picture. :)

I have this pattern .. it is on my 2do list.. I have 11 projects in front of it!

mary quite contrary 02-05-2009 05:47 PM

Star spin is my avatar.

Deene 02-05-2009 05:58 PM

was the star spin hard to do?

mary quite contrary 02-05-2009 06:16 PM

Yes. I didn't find the directions very user friendly. Three of us did it together. One was pretty new to quilting, another worked in the LQS and I have been quilting for over 20 years and sewing for longer. All of us struggled and only 2 of us finished. The LQS one hasn't finished hers.

Deene 02-05-2009 06:40 PM

I am glad to hear that. I thought maybe it was just me. It has become a very frustrating project.

connie_1936 04-09-2011 07:12 PM

i don't think the law applies to what you make from the books instructions but to the book itself.

Another thing you can do is take a screen shot and save it in a word document so you can look at it as often as needed if you are trying to figure out how it was constructed.

There is a good Tutorial on You Tube. It is called "Sew Easy Strata Star". It is almost Identical to the one we are talking about here but a different name. It uses 7 strips instead of 8 and the girl shows you exactly how to cut the strips and how to sew them together. I have a pattern for New Orleans Puzzle (same design) but the Instructions are so difficult to understaned so I found this "Sew Easy Strata Star Tutorial" on You Tube and shows it SOOOOO easy to do.

If the Star Spin pattern scares you you might try this one first to get acquainted with the idea. Star Spin is not really that hard to make, I made a couple of smaller size wall hangings, no problem. Just think of the pattern as another strip piecing project! With beautiful colors, of course. Well, the large Star Spin is still on my to-do list, I have the pattern but not the fabrics.

It's a beautiful design. There's one version of it at Oregon Treasures:
