New Thread?

What kind of thread do you use? Do you buy thread online, and is your machine picky about the thread you use?

happyquiltmom 01-24-2013 04:37 AM

I use Presencia thread. It's the only brand we carry at the LQS where I work. It is Egyptian long staple thread, terrific stuff. And only 1.69 a spool.

My new favourite thread for piecing is Aurifil. I buy it at my LQS which makes it kind of expensive but you can buy it cheaper online.

I have some aurifil and sulky but I have always primarily used the "dreaded" Coats and Clark and none of my machines mind at all.

BellaBoo 01-24-2013 05:57 AM

I have some of every brand. I like to piece with 50 wt 2 ply or 60wt. I don't have a favorite but I use Aurifil 50wt 2 ply for piecing because I have so much of it right now.

I love Connecting Threads, Thread. They have so many beautiful colors, the spools are 1200 yards. $2.49 a spool, but you can also get it for 1.99 when on sale. I sew on a Bernina and it loves their thread!!

Me too! I prefer the Coats & Clark Dual Duty XP. I find the regular C&C cotton to be really linty. Not that that keeps me from using it if I have it on hand and it is the color I want. I just clean out the bobbin area more frequently.

My machine will use whatever I put on it. I buy on line all the time.

Jingle 01-24-2013 07:17 AM

So far my machines like any thread. Good thing, I have C&C and connecting thread threads, lots of both.

Dolphyngyrl 01-24-2013 07:24 AM

Any, not very often, and no it sews with anything

Scissor Queen 01-24-2013 07:35 AM

I use Aurifil, Prescencia, Mettler, King Tut and Wonderfil. Machines can't be picky, they're machines. If you're having problems with a thread it means you don't have the needle and tension combination right.

My machines will use any thread without any problems. I have ordered from Connecting Threads ,and Superior Threads.

Aurifil is my favorite and a spool seems to last forever. I buy various light colors of the 50wt for piecing and have just recently tried the 40wt for machine quilting. I recently bought a couple spools of Connecting Threads. I haven't found it to be terribly linty or anything and they do have oodles of beautiful colors. I sew on a Juki and several old Singers and none of them complain about either of these threads! I have also used Prescensia (sp?) and I like it just fine too!

Mine will sew with anything I throw at it. I have all kinds of thread. Couldn't even begin to tell you brands. Lots of it is ancient as well from a yard sale. Doesn't matter. Have never bought thread online, though. Haven't needed to.

I use Masterpiece by Superior Threads for piecing. I use Connecting Threads Essentials if I am making a bag and want to do topstitching to match and I primarily use King Tut for larm.

TexasSunshine 01-24-2013 01:36 PM

I bought a lot of large spools of Signature thread for 1/2 off and it works great in my Pfaff, Brother and LA machine. I just ordered a few spools of LA thread from Connecting Threads to see if they would work in my LA and they work great. I will be ordering more. I seem to mainly use beiges or off-whites or tans.

patchsamkim 01-24-2013 02:32 PM

I use Mettler that I have lots of spools of, but as I buy new thread, I have been buying Aurifil and Presencia threads.

susie-susie-susie 01-24-2013 03:33 PM

I used to use Gutterman, but I tried Aurifil and it is now one of my favorites. My other favorite is Essential from Connecting Threads. They both seem to last forever.

I,too, use Presencia 50 wt. I buy the cones. My machine loves it.

IrishNY 01-24-2013 07:05 PM

I love Aurifil because it's thin and strong and it seems I can get twice as much thread on a bobbin as I can with other threads which means I can sew longer!
