OK, as you may know I usually do everything by hand, but I am developing some interest in trying to do some things on machine.
The drawback being my machine is so basic... like just one step up from needle and thread. And not really financially or mentally ready for a "really good" quilting machine. Well, I went to Target the other day and saw a machine that said it has "quilting features" and the best thing.. it was on sale!
Under $100.. well, ok.. so it's only a dollar under .. but still under..lol
I mulled it over, came home, went back and did a little more reading .. then saw it was the ONLY one on the shelf... to make an already long story a touch shorter.. it is now sitting in my living room. It's a Brother XL 3750.
Not real fancy, but does have a walking foot, a quilting foot and a 1/4" quilting foot, a "flat bed attachment" to make the bed larger to support big projects.
Also has a number of built in stitches, buttonholer, etc... Nah.. I'm not excited.... nah.. not me...lol Hope this was a good buy.

funquilter 06-13-2009 07:07 AM

have fun with your new toy!!!!!

Ninnie 06-13-2009 07:08 AM

Wow Tippy, what a great find, I need to get on down to Target!

Hope you have a lot of fun with it!

Esqmommy 06-13-2009 07:28 AM

sounds like you can't go wrong with that toy. Be careful, it can be like drugs ...once you try the "light" stuff, it's easy to get addicted to the "heavy" (read EXPENSIVE) ones...

amma 06-13-2009 07:45 AM

Woo Hoo Tippy!!! How could you pass up a deal like that??? I bet you are going to have lots of fun with your new machine :D :D :D

BellaBoo 06-13-2009 07:48 AM

A new sewing machine thrills me, even the old ones I find at the thrift stores. You will love it! You got a great buy too.

sharon b 06-13-2009 07:51 AM

What a great deal! Enjoy your machine, it can be so much fun to play with a new toy. But boy, is Esqmommy correct. After a while you start coveting all the bells & whistles, I especially am lusting over the automatic thread cutter! LOL

Esqmommy 06-13-2009 08:03 AM

Me too...unfortunately, can't swing it now!!!

RedGarnet222 06-13-2009 09:29 AM

yippee! A new toy for you! How fun, tippy! Enjoy it and may it never give you a moments trouble.

MadQuilter 06-13-2009 09:56 AM

Congratulations, I now pronounce you Tippy and Brother - lol. One of mine is a Brother and I love it. I bought it primarily to take to the occasional class since I didn't want to lug my higher end machine in the car.

Knot Sew 06-13-2009 10:15 AM

Wow ow you' ll be a fast lady now.....have fun :D

kluedesigns 06-13-2009 11:32 AM

YIPPEE!!

congrats on the new sewing machine. you're gonna love it. you don't need a top of the line sewing machine to produce excellent work.

you're going to be amazed at how much work you can get done by using a machine.

you'll be able to put together a lap quilt in a few hours.

CajunQuilter2 06-13-2009 11:52 AM

Yea sounds like an AWESOME buy to me. I have a brother 650q with everything you just described plus maybe a few more extra's and I paid ALOT more than $100.00 ENJOY :D :D :D :D

Eddie 06-13-2009 11:54 AM

Yea! Hurray for you! Glad you found this, I'm sure it's going to give you many years of enjoyment and help you produce many, many great projects. :)

sandpat 06-13-2009 12:30 PM

Sounds to me like you got a great deal! Have fun getting to know your new toy!

beachlady 06-13-2009 12:38 PM

Congrats. Sounds like you got a good deal.

redquilter 06-13-2009 02:15 PM

Gee, that sounds great. Has everything you need to keep you going for quite a while. Enjoy and have fun!

Lacelady 06-13-2009 02:20 PM

I would have thought the walking foot, quater inch foot, quillting foot and flat bed would have almost cost what you paid for everything. If you look at it like that, your machine was almost Free! Well done.

Shemjo 06-13-2009 04:51 PM

How happy you will be with your new toy! What a great find and at a great price! All those extras are going to be sew nice to have!

sewjoyce 06-13-2009 06:01 PM

WooHoo!! Way to go!

littlehud 06-13-2009 06:57 PM

Great find. You are going to have so much fun with this new machine. Keep us posted on the new things you are doing with it.

sewsewquilter 06-14-2009 03:48 AM

Oh fun a new toy! Happy quilting to you.

Rose Marie 06-14-2009 06:36 AM

I also bought a Brother quilting machine. It was 129 dollars several years ago. It is a good machine but did not have a needle down feature or a large throat so it is my fall back machine if my expensive one breaks down.
It was well worth the cheap price and is still working fine. Yes it came with all the things you mentioned and that made it a great buy.

crkathleen 06-14-2009 09:59 AM

Tippy,
Congrats!!
I bought the same machine a few months ago. It does great. My only problem is the throat is only 5.5". There is no way that I will be able to quilt a king on it so i'm going to try the fun and done. I've quilting a baby quilt on it and it worked out fine. I'm almost ready to free motion a lap size but that will have to wait for a few weeks. Going on vacation at the end of the week (Yeah!).

Oh, and when I use my cone of thread to piece I place it in a vase behind the machine.

Have fun!

Mousie 06-14-2009 11:34 AM

you know enthusiasm is contagious...
will have to contain myself, and wait for your pics! :D

mamabird3 06-14-2009 11:46 AM

Good for you Tippy!!
Miss you on late night chats!

wraez 06-18-2009 09:57 AM

congrats on your new 'toy'....have fun using it! Most quilting is all straight stitching, you don't need the fancy stuff (altho it is fun too)

warm quilt hugs, sue

mytwopals 06-18-2009 10:03 AM

Have fun with your new toy. Take good care of her and she'll keep you in stitches for years to come.

Boston1954 06-18-2009 10:17 AM

Fancy or not, it feels good to have a machine that is new, all yours, and on sale. Have fun.

omak 06-18-2009 10:33 AM

Sounds like you got an excellent good buy! Good for you!
Actually, it sounds like you got a really TERRIFIC buy!
I have a friend who bought a brother such as yours, and it would do darning ... great! Except the feed dogs didn't go down, and they were expecting me to quilt with that thing with NO darning foot!
Right now, I am especially enjoying the fact that you got a quarter inch foot ... since I can't find any of mine, and since I never bothered to use them, and since I have FINALLY found out that the machine I am currently using at the Post ... doesn't have an accurate quarter inch anything ... I am glad you have one.
ANd, that extended table! Good deal! Those things cost almost a hundred dollars on their own!
Figure almost fifty dollars for all those feet, almost a hundred dollars for the extension table ... how much did you pay for that machine again??? LOL
Good job!

Linsoblu 06-18-2009 12:22 PM

Great buy enjoy. One of the gal's in quilt guild bought a new machine with Quilters companion on it she was so excited and said she didn't know if that meant she should sew with it or sleep with it. Have fun.

KyKaren1949 06-18-2009 12:45 PM

I just bought a 1947 Singer Featherweight on Ebay to use for quilting classes. They say it's one of the best ever made. It only weight 11 lbs. I was so excited. I even stayed up to about 1:30 am to win that bid.
Finally, something around here older than me (1949~)

sewnsewer2 06-18-2009 01:09 PM

Congrats on the new machine, have fun!

nana2 06-18-2009 05:29 PM

I'm so glad you took a step into the 21st century!!!! You will love the speed. Sometimes it is not necessary to have a lot of whistles and bells.

OHSue 06-18-2009 07:28 PM

Wow, sounds like a great deal, especially with the extra stuff included. I think a basic machine is great for most everything. I have a machine that does a number of decorative stitches and have never used anything beyond the blind hem stitch (I do clothes, also) and the buttonhole stitch.

JoanneS 06-18-2009 08:53 PM

Tippy - I am SO happy for you :D :D :D :D :D :D
And it was nice to read the reinforcement of your decision by crkathleen having bought the same machine and being happy with it. Since you are a hand quilter (thus far LOL), the throat space is NOT going to hold you back.

I'm looking forward to seeing your first project pictured here

PrettyKitty 06-18-2009 11:38 PM

WOW what a bargain. SOuond like you are all set to go, have fun!

Aunt Doggie 06-23-2009 08:09 AM

Unfortunately I had to work all week.....I keep telling myself it's to pay for fabric!! So I've just gotten a good start on my first project.. I'm not sure How big it will be, and I will wait and post pics.. hopefully this weekend. I'm just letting it tell me what it's going to be as I go along. The only thing I'll say right now is...........it's BRIGHT!!! but then would you expect anything else? <grin> and as I didn't use a pattern I have to go buy more fabric when I get a chance.. prolly Thursday...then chop it up and add it.
