Has anyone ever done a 9 patch in shades of the same color? Or a disappearing 9 patch in shades of the same color?

This probably sounds silly, but I am trying to figure out a small quilt...for my mother's cat...but I suppose that is beside the point. Mom really really only likes blue and has requested blue.

I have a great deal of trouble visualizing this...wondering about adding white.

Anyway...has anyone done this? Can I find pictures somewhere?

PaperPrincess 08-24-2011 06:31 PM

I think shades of the same color, going from very pale to very dark would work well and be very striking. How does the cat feel about blue?

quiltsRfun 08-24-2011 06:36 PM

It would be great in blues. I'm working on a similar quilt right now - shades of blue

Dina 08-24-2011 06:37 PM

Funny! Actually, the cat's eyes are blue....so she probably likes blue. This all came about because every time I take a quilt to show my mom...who is in assisted living, but they let her have her cat...the cat just jumps on the quilt and has a great time. Mom told me yesterday I ought to make Sassy a quilt.

Mom doesn't really like quilts, so this is as close as I can get to getting to make Mom a quit. :) (So why do I take my quilts to show to her??? Don't have an answer for that...hoping she will really like one, I guess.)

QuiltE 08-24-2011 06:41 PM

Maybe once you do a quilt for Sassy, then your Mom will want one to match!!

cheriami 08-24-2011 06:44 PM

I think it would like great! I am personally fond of quilts with out to much contrast...think the sky and all of the different blues. I would use the disappearing nine patch rather than a plain 9 patch.

that is what I was thinking...ehhhe

Don't feel too strange abut making a quilt for the cat. I made two "cat mats" for our Spooky, because he was leaving black hair all over the place. He liked them a lot, right up until he realized we really, really wanted him to sleep on them. Now I can't get him anywhere near them. That's a cat for ya!

I have seen a truly awesome all-blue quilt here, as someone's avatar. Wish I could remember who it is. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Dina 08-24-2011 06:52 PM

Thanks for the encouragement. Going to my stash now to pick out my blues!!

moonwork42029 08-24-2011 06:53 PM

Sassy with the blue eyes might be Siamese?

If so, then she'll surely want some velvet or corduroy for some soft texture. Fleece or flannel on the back of it would be ever so soft too.

Our cats love to lay on things that really contrast with their fur...it makes their beauty show more too.

Want to go all out for Sassy? Put some ribbons loops on the edges like for a baby... She'll probably play with them too.

You could also do some embroidery of fish, mice, birds etc to go with the whole kitty good life.

Enjoy and make your Mom smile with Sassy's quilt.

AudreyB 08-24-2011 07:10 PM

That will be fun. How big (or small) are you thinking?

Flour Sack Mama 08-24-2011 07:16 PM

The assortment of blues sounds gorgeous.

mom-6 08-24-2011 07:35 PM

I'm doing one now that is a variety of blues from prints with navy background to ones with pale blue on cream. It alternates pinwheels with disappearing 4 patch. I'm really liking how it looks. Yours should work great!

blueangel 08-24-2011 09:28 PM

I think it would be great in shades of blue.

Jim 08-24-2011 09:36 PM

I make pet pads for our vet to use in the cages...doesnt matter what fabrics I use...or how scrappy..its all to make our 4 legged babies more comfy...

Teacup 08-24-2011 09:37 PM

If you can make a nice-looking 9 patch from the shades of blue it will look great as a disappearing variety.

k3n 08-24-2011 11:04 PM

If you do the d9p I would use the darkest blue for the centre square of the 9patch, a medium blue for the four centre side pieces and a light square for the four corners. I think they always look more striking with this configuration as the larger squares then appear to 'float' over the smaller squares and rectangles that emerge. If you're planning to use more than 3 fabrics, I'd sort them into three groups by colour value, ie dark, medium and light and place them as I suggested. I think it would be beautiful. :-D

Here are some to inpsire you! They are not all blue, but each is a variety of shades of one color.

Sounds like it would be pretty

ckcowl 08-25-2011 01:18 AM

i didn't make a 9-patch in blues- but i did a whole bargello quilt with nothing but blues- it is wonderful- there are so many shades/colors of blues- as long as you have some contrast whole color quilts work very well-
i also did a quilt with nothing but tans/creams (star blocks) they are great too-
go for it- she will love it

pjnesler 08-25-2011 03:47 AM

I think the blues would be great, would love to see it when done!

does any one know how to figure how much fabric to get for a king size disapering nine patch I need to know quickly

Wanabee Quiltin 08-25-2011 03:59 AM

I make all kinds of quilts using all blues, my favorite color. Why not use a very light blue with a darker blue ? Works for me.

It all depends on what size of 9P you start with. Make your first block thru to the D9P stage. Then measure what size it is, along with allowance for the seams. Of course, this can be done on paper, though you may want to try a few combos to know what you like best.

Once you have that measurement on paper or IRL, then you can determine how many D9P blocks you need for the size of quilt you want. Graph paper can help you draw up your plan to scale, and help with the measurements of what you need.

Then do the math from there, according to how large you want the D9P portion? whether you want borders? how many? how large? whether you want it just as a bed top? or as a bed spread? tuck in around the pillows? foot board or not? etc.

The problem is ... all King size quilts are not the same, so you really do need to do your own calculations. I commonly make 100"x100" quilts for my double bed, yet many consider that a King Size quilt. So yes, not all King quilts are created equal!!

vickimc 08-25-2011 04:42 AM

sounds great. go for it, after all it is for the Cat. by the way My dog has one of his own. LOL

knitpick 08-25-2011 04:44 AM

here is one I made in shades of blue

orangeroom 08-25-2011 04:57 AM

It doesn't sound silly. I made many quilts for a relative who bred pekes. Most smaller than 2'x2'. I'm sure kitty won't mind what color. The size you're talking about is rather quick to turn out. You can always make a second one with an accent color in it and see which one is preferred.

mynani 08-25-2011 05:01 AM

D9P inblue

Animal Shelters would love some mats too. If you have old blankets or towels also. Please remember our less fortunate furry friends.

I help out at our local shelter, when I can stand to see them, and I know that towels and blankets of any kind are needed.

Rub some catnip on them and see what he does!

Drew 08-25-2011 05:48 AM

You might be able to made a blue toy for the cat - filled with fiber and catnip!

quiltmouse 08-25-2011 06:07 AM

I lost my cats, 11/10 and 7/27. They both loved to touch anything really soft, like the really soft fleece fabrics. So, maybe a fleece border, where she can reach out & touch the edge while laying on the middle?

I am quite confident you can only use shades of blue and it will be lovely! Just be sure to stay in the same hue.

johanna2le 08-25-2011 06:07 AM

I hope you will post a picture when you done. I would love to see it.

Here is a d9p that a Guild member made out of shades of pink. She used three colors. I think it turned out very nice.

Meant to say that she used 3 shades of pink.

The cat will really appreciate wool batting ... An old sweater if the quilt is small.

virgwid 08-25-2011 08:06 AM

You do realize that now we will all be hounding you till we see a pic of Sassy and the quilt!! :) Virg

PolarBear 08-25-2011 08:21 AM

I,m a pretty good visualizer, the D9P sounds like a great idea.
