no one around here that has a good quilting class

I went to our sweeper/sewing seller with high hopes yesterday. I knew that they had sewing/quilting classes and I was hoping to go to a few to perfect my skills. Unfortunately, the lady that did the quilting classes no longer does it and the only sewing classes they have (like 6 times a year) is for kids/beginners. I'm really frustrated that there's no one around here that has a good quilting class. I'm so jealous of you ladies that get to go to some.

Have you ever tried Craftsy? They have online classes with video instruction. You can access it as many times as you want for as long as you want...forever! If you have questions you ask them and the instructor responds within a day or two.

Craftsy is a good place for classes. There are hundreds of books out there that explain techniques well. Depending on what you want to learn. Books that I recommend are: Harriet Hargrave's Quilters Academy series (4 in all - starting with beginner thru advanced) for piecing; Sally Collins' Precision Piecing is also excellent; Harriet Hargrave's "Heirloom Machine Quilting" for machine quilting; and Jinny Beyer has a book on hand piecing and hand quilting. These are all "user friendly."

I agree about Craftsy classes. They are so informative and you don't have to pack up your sewing room and go somewhere! There is a place to ask questions and you get to see what others are working on. You could check at your local library to see if there is a quilt guild anywhere near you. If not, ask if you could put up a flyer to see if there is interest in either starting one or just a meet and sew group. I also agree about the Harriet Hargrave books (haven't seen the others) - my cutting of strips and 1/4" seams really improved by using her books.
I was going to take a quilting class at a local shop - the supply list was a full page long. Made me tired to just think of having to pack all that stuff up, unpack it at the shop and then bring it all home. The class was yesterday and I thought it was today!!
Best wishes to you.

Have you tried quilt shops? My first class I took was an evening high school class. I was in that class for 9 years. The instructor has become one of my close friends. That was 31 years ago. By the way, she still teaches quilting at the same high school. Good luck!

Look up quilt guilds in pennsylvania. You can find a list of guilds and the meeting times. Maybe you can find one that suits you. That is a great place for classes and just a lot of hands on help from the other members.

I have the same problem. I am a beginner..I would say almost an advanced beginner and I went to our local quilt store and it seems that they are more geared for beginner..beginner or advanced. I was pretty bummed. I have been sewing for 20 years and now I want to quilt.

The closest one is 45 minutes away. That's a half tank of gas back and forth $25. Not an option.

Traditional Quilter made some really good recommendations for books. I highly recommend them also - have them all. I haven't taken any quilting classes for quite some time. Finally bought a small machine so I don't have to lug my big machine - now it will be interesting to see if I actually take any classes or just use it for my grandkids. Good luck in your quest.
