I have found that thread with intense color does indeed need a looser tension than those of a lighter color. I've been told it is because the thread is left in the dye long as it has to absorb more pigment. I don't change tension every single time but I do always check, just in case.

Yep, pretty much. Different colors of the same brand of thread can have different thicknesses, or the twist is a tiny bit different.
Remember this is NOT a home sewing machine...it's an industrial machine...your tension dial may/may not have numbers on your tension dial...the dial does not have settings, any marks or numbers are for reference only...if you start with a 2 at the top...one full turn will put the 2 back at the top.

I have a TL18LS (2009 model) with a Qbot (robot) attached. I run my tensions fairly loose. I can run any thread, but do adjust almost every time....it's the nature of the "beast."

If you are using the same kind of thread on your longarm machine each time, is it normal to have to adjust the tension with ever change of color? I've been having to re-adjust every time and I've never had to do that on my regular sewing machine. Just wondering if it was me, my machine or common occurance.
