Northcott Fabric?
What is everyone's opinion on Northcott fabric? I am currently working on a quilt that is all 30's prints and I would like to have an off-white antiqueish colored fabric to go with. I am a big fan of Moda solids and Kona, but I found this Northcott Antique 13 that I think would go great with. I have never used any Northcott so what do you think? Or do some of you have another color/brand that looks old/antique looking?
Thanks all! |
Northcott has some beautiful fabrics. They are nice quality. The most popular ones I've seen recently are Stonehenge and Peacock Paradise - not what you are looking for, but just for reference of their quality.
|
I have used it once and was happy with it.

Touch and feel and get up close and personal with the fabric you are considering and make your decision on the facts of what it is! :)
(and audition with your other fabrics, that for sure it is what you want) Northcott Fabrics has a good name. |
I made a 30's Irish Chain several years ago & got some really nice white from Nancy's Notions that was called "Vintage White" (I think). It was perfect! Not too white & not too cream.
|
Northcott is a very reputable manufacturer. I've used their fabric for years.
The only white I use (whenever white is needed) is Robert Kaufman's Kona Snow. http://www.fabric.com has the best price (trust me I've done extensive research on this, since I use a great deal of it) + free shipping when your order is $35 or more. |
I'm using Northcott Stonehenge fabrics in a quilt right now. I love the feel of the fabric and the quality. My only negative about it is that it tends unravel more than some of the other fabrics I've worked with.
|
I got some fabric at an estate sale called "Northcott Silk". It is not silk but it is quilting cotton. This is the most amazing stuff! Really different from other fabrics. I will say that Maywood seems to be the heaviest and most reliable fabric - they just don't always have the prints I want. I've been folding up my quilting room so have had a chance to compare. Definitely Maywood is super high quality still - as some have gone down hill.
Another thing I have noticed is that the older Joann's or Cranston is really good quality fabric. As good as the brand names today. Some of the brands have gotten as thin as voile almost. |

I like their fabric quality. I have used some in several quilts.

Northcott is my favourite fabric. I can pick it out just by the feel. I've never yet been disappointed in any of their fabrics and buy it every chance I get.
|
Northcott makes great fabric, don't think you could go wrong.
|
Nortcott has some wonderful fabric, I purchase it often.Tthey have beautiful prints and excellent quality. You will not be sorry for the purchase............
|
Ive used many of Northcott's prints and find the fabric to be great quality.
|
I agree with "pinkcastle", I found the Stonehenge fabric easy to unravel. It did have beautiful colors and a very nice weight and smoothe silky finish.

BurchQ ... I am in the Stonehenge Fan Club ... and have used it and strange enough it is also invading my stash! Honestly, I don't "get" this thing about it ravelling. Haven't had the problem while pre-washing (anymore than is normal and acceptable) nor when using it in a project. It's wonderful fabric JIMHO ... but who am I?
Do you like being in their fan club? It sounds cool... |

Pictures of some of your Stonehenge quilts maybe? Please? Purty please?
Do you like being in their fan club? It sounds cool... Oh dear no ... no "official" fan club, just was letting it be known I love the stuff. So far no "official" quilt that's all or primarily Stonehenge. I just love using it. It's been a God-send for some blenders in the FWS/PC blocks as I love the different colours that come out in one piece, rather than a consistent colouring. When I was looking for "flesh" for Monty, I searched high and low and then finally went aha, what about Stonehenge? and sure enough, the best flesh simulation I could find! :) |
I use Stonehenge quite often, too. It's a great mixer with batiks, a super blender with numerous other print lines, wonderful for dimensional or landscape work, and a general 'rock solid' basic to have in your stash. teehee
The background yellow in this little guy is Stonehenge. http://i29.servimg.com/u/f29/13/49/59/13/yellow11.jpg |

I used Stonehenge for a scrap quilt - all 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 pieces. I found it to ravel more than usual but then again, I was using a lot of batiks at the time so my tolerance for ravelling might have been low. I just used some scraps in a paper piecing class and it worked well. I think it really depends on how much it will be handled in the quiltmaking and the size of the pieces it will be cut into.

Northcott has some very nice fabrics but like any fabric you must decide if it is what you want to put in your quilt.

I've used Northcott fabrics for years. They are high quality and work well with other brands. You'll be very happy with Northcott. My local Bernina sells their line.
