i need some help please, i'm cutting all my squares 5" making a 9 patch block and i don't know how to measure for finishing size of block, my next question is how many finishing blocks will i need to make a king size quilt i hope my question make sense and not totally stupid thank everyone in advance.

I'm not 100% sure, but your unfinished block should be 14", so your finished block will be 13.5" - number of blocks for king size quilt - 8 across by 8 down - 108"x108" - without any borders - but I hope somebody else gets on here and says my calculations are correct! Please!

Oops - sorry - eight blocks across by 8 blocks down = 64 blocks total.

That is what I come up with too. :D:D:D

That sounds right to me. Have fun making your quilt and remember to post pics.

What am I missing here? Three 5 inch blocks would be 15 minus two .25 seams would be I thought 14.5; then when the nine patches were sewn together with .25 inch seams
the blocks would be 14 inches. Then 8 x8 would be 112 by 112. Just curious? |
I think you're right, McQuilter.

Your mistake is in the "two .25 seams". Those two 1/4 inch seams actually use 1/2 inch of fabric, that is 1/4" off each side of the seam. Or in other words, each 5" square loses 1/2" when finished, so it's 3 x 4.5" or 13.5 finished block.

Thanks for the explanation?

I figure it like Pam did. The 5 inch becomes a 4 1/2 inch finished. So using 3 of the 4 1/2 squares equals 13 1/2. Ea. block is then 13 1/2 X 13 1/2. Multiply that (13 1/2) times however many blocks wide you want to get the desired width of your quilt & the same for the length. Hope this helps?
