OBW 6 or 8 pieces??
I put together blocks from a purchased kit that used 8 pieces. I have them finished, love them, and have some different fabric that I want to use for another. My question: Which number do most prefer and for what reasons? I like the idea of equilateral triangles that can be turned for a totally different look even if you cut in the same place. But thought maybe it looked more kaleidoscope with octagon. I may have missed a previous post. If so, please point me to it. Thanks for your help.

I personally prefer the 6 pieces, for 2 reasons. First is that it's easier to put together the 6 triangles than to put together 8 pieces plus corners. Second is that when I look at the ones made with 8 pieces, I often see the vertical and horizontal lines running through the quilt, whereas those don't exist with the ones made from 6 pieces. With the OBW, I don't look for the kaleidoscope look of individual blocks so much as I look at the overall effect and marvel at how the original fabric has changed.

I've done both, and I prefer the 6 piece version. The piece of fabric is larger, so the pattern is "clearer" if that makes any sense.

I prefer the 6 as well, it is easier to put together.
Have a look at what k3n did with the same fabric, she did one as a hexagon and one as an octagon http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ns-t96623.html |
I prefer the 6 as well.

I have done both as well and do prefer the 6 sided. I like the flexibility of choosing which way I want the sides put together. The 8 pieces is a bit more complicated with the mini blocks that help put it together. I found that a bit challenging and they all didn't match as they were suppose to.

Thanks for your opinions and for the reference back to an older thread. I have read everything and appreciate the input. One thing I forgot to mention is that it will have to have sashes as I bought the blocks on e-bay and there were only 30 of them measuring 8 inches. So I have to figure out how to put in filler blocks, etc. They were VERY expensive, but it was the fabric that I thought I HAD to have. Now I have to figure out the rest..... Hopefully, a bright light will shine and I will have a plan. Thanks again.

Sure would love to see those blocks! Can you post a picture of them?
