OBW Mavens - Fabric Question
 

So yesterday I asked about the OBW size because I fell in love with a fabric but my husband the math geek is telling me the fabric might not be the best for this type of quilt.

I did the whole two mirror thing at the store and to me it looked amazing but I was wondering if I could get opinions.

It will work for a OBW, but some of the blocks are going to have sharp corners / edges. That's okay, you just have to be extra careful and precise when cutting and piecing because any triangles that are slightly off of the others will stick out more on those blocks.

I think with this one you're mostly going to have light and dark blocks in the same color palette, since pattern is so small and intricate, but I think it will be beautiful. I think it will end up looking similar to the "single-color" OBWs, kind of like an antique Persian tapestry. I say go for it!

I think it will be gorgeous! Very muted and calming. Can't wait to see how it comes out.

Gorgeous fabric. Before I knew that OBW meant One Block Wonder I dubbed them Oh, by the way quilts. Can't get that out of my mind.

I agree that it would be a very muted quilt - if that is what you want then go for it - I do not think that the fabric lends itself to the splashes of color that most OBW have - I have never seen a one color OBW but the fabric you picked is beautiful.

It is 18" repeat so I'm going to get 9.5 yards to do 3 sets. I'm also thinking of getting the fabric for the back so that on the front you have the obw and on the back the original fabric.

ITA with the others that this could work well for OBW. Also, for a SAW (8 pc Kaleidos) which could take you from the muted look into a little more drama, if you chose to set it up with one of the darks.

Many will tell you no, as it doesn't stick to the "rules"!! But who follows rules? :D Traditionally we are told it needs to have movement, it should not have straight lines, it should not be a small pattern ..... and yet, there have been some impressive OBWs done with all the rules broken!

If you have any hestitations, a good way to try it, is to take a strip just the width of your triangles down the side of your 6 (or 8) repeats, and stack them up to make your first hexies. That way, if you don't like it, you have only lost a few inches of your fabric, and would be able to salvage the bulk of the yardage for a different project.

That is one gorgeous piece of fabric. Is it by Paula Nadelstern? It already has such beautiful symmetry that I would find another purpose for it.

I agree with the other posters. The individual blocks will be amazing, but the quilt won't have the typical OBW waves of specific colors. If that's your aim, then go for it. However, I think it will be a whole lot of work and you will wind up with a quilt top that looks very similar to the original fabric.
