Ohhhh noooo. Why UFOs happen

Finally back to sewing after a hiatus due to Sandy (we lost power for ten days but no other damage, for which we are very grateful).

I'm making a QAYG using the Fast Lane pattern (kinda looks like plaid when completed correctly, correctly being the operative word).

I completed all 48 blocks, assembled them into 8 rows of 6 blocks each, laid them out and .... Hmmm ....what's wrong here? The colors weren't lining up correctly. Finally got out the pattern, pored over the instructions, and found that 45 of the 48 blocks had been assembled incorrectly.

Two options: disassemble the rows and correct the 45 incorrect blocks, or take apart the three "correct" ones to look like the rest. I will lose the plaid effect but, well, I don't think I'm up to the bigger task. Not sure I can bear this job...it could become a UFO.

This is so discouraging.

Thanks for letting me whine.

Pic of the way the quilt will be assembled using Plan B, which loses some of the woven effect.

BeckyB 11-11-2012 01:18 PM

You poor thing! I hate it when I do stuff like that! I am glad to hear you only lost power, so many have lost so much more!
I like your signature, kinda reflects this case!

Sorry to hear that. It's no fun having to change plans at this point. But if you exchange the position of the blocks, on every second column, doesn't that get the woven effect back?

jcrow 11-11-2012 01:31 PM

Don't rip them all out. Just rip out the three. The quilt will be just fine like it is. So sorry to hear about you being without power for so long.

Good thought...I will keep trying. But I think if I do that the paisley (lighter pink) and floral (darker pink) rows wont line up. Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh... I didn't notice the difference in those 2 fabrics. Rats! How about rotating each of those blocks 180 degrees as you swap them. That will put the paisley on the other side of those columns which would actually make the horizontal and vertical patterns more similar (alternating paisley/solid/floral ... floral/solid/paisley).

Good luck. I hope you can find something that makes you happy, with minimal ripping.

If I rotate them either the vertical pink fabrics or the horizontal pink fabrics don't line up. I'll have to decide which is the lesser of two mistakes.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your concern, but we really only suffered an inconvenience (and besides that we escaped to visit my 2-1/2year old grandson for part of that time, always a delight). We have friends who had lots of damage, which puts things in perspective.

People have been amazing...Lots of volunteers, linemen/women and law enforcement from distant states, national guard keeping everyone safe, donations flowing in.

ube quilting 11-11-2012 02:03 PM

Glad to hear you made it through okay. the quilt on the other hand:(. This all depends on you of course. IMHO, I would change the three and call this one 'Sandy's Fault'. Ha. It looks cool the way it is and I would do another with the plaid theme.
peace

cowgirlquilter 11-11-2012 02:22 PM

I think your plan b will be fine...then chalk it up to a lesson learned.......

Cindy2201 11-11-2012 04:00 PM

Well you couldn't wait to get back to sewing, but like I said it would be in the trash if it were me! You do have alternatives and I really like the colors in it! It will look nice anyway.

JulieR 11-11-2012 04:08 PM

Learn from my misfortune: fix the three. It'll be beautiful anyway, even if it isn't what you originally intended.

One of my UFOs is stuffed in the closet because I tried to fix every block. Yeah, that's never happening...

Mariposa 11-11-2012 04:09 PM

Am glad to know you came through the storm safe and sound! I'd say change the three, and say it is creative license to do it that way! :) Who will know besides you-???
Perhaps later, you can do the pattern again in different colors/fabrics and see how it turns out~

cjr 11-11-2012 05:18 PM

i think it looks ok. Only a quilter with a negative attitude (quilt police)would comment adversly. For what this is worth I belong to a scrappy group whose new motto is "Finished is better then perfect." That little bit of breathing room is wonderful.

Hi,

I couldn't let go of this, because I keep seeing a fix for it. I took the upper left corner of your picture, grabbed the middle column, and flipped the entire set of blocks 180 degrees. Outlined in red is the section I flipped. Imagine you had these 4 blocks stitched together in your original orientation (as a vertical column). Now, grab the whole thing and turn it top to bottom - this is the result. Do it on every second column and you have a woven pattern.

coopah 11-13-2012 05:21 AM

Just do the three. Five years from now, you won't remember the "mistake." Glad to hear you have power again.

quiltmom04 11-13-2012 05:36 AM

I wouldn't worry about any of it. I was glad to see the picture where you circled the and arrowhead the blocks that were wrong. I just couldn't see it! Plus, it Ppears as thought those seams will show up on the front, which interrupts the woven look anyway.

be a quilter 11-13-2012 05:55 AM

Will they match if you turn them upside down?

Been there done that, it looks fine this way. But as you said it changed your pattern finished look, who will know but you.
I like it, the colors are nice also.

k9dancer 11-13-2012 06:42 AM

I agree with quiltmom. Unless this is to be a 'show' quilt, leave the whole thing as is. Sometimes we worry too much.

Neesie 11-13-2012 06:43 AM

If it was me, I'd undo the wrong ones . . . but that's just me. Otherwise, I'd always be thinking of how it "should" look . . . and regret not fixing it, when I had the chance.

sguillot 11-13-2012 07:05 AM

I feel so bad for all of that that was hit by Sandy and glad to know you are ok. Living on the Gulf Coast I know first hand what it's like having gone through Ike a few years back and glad to see you are quilting again. Your quilt is beautiful. I don't have any suggestions but you have several to choose from. Good Luck and Glad you are ok.

carolynjo 11-13-2012 07:30 AM

I agree with most others; just change out the three that are "correct" and only you will know it in the finished product. Glad you have power back. In our mountainous areas, some folks go for weeks without power when we have bad snow storms, so glad you did not have to wait too long.

sewnut 11-13-2012 11:36 AM

Heres the good news. To me it looks like a ribbon weaving, and very beautiful. i think you should change the three and finish it, then post your results. Go for it! i think you have a beauty there.

maviskw 11-13-2012 12:06 PM

Listen to Kristakz. I think she has the solution. She went to a lot of trouble to find the way to put it together.

TinkerQuilts 11-13-2012 01:06 PM

Wouldn't you get the right look if, in each row, you turned every other block 90 degrees?

Sucia 11-13-2012 03:54 PM

This looks great! I showed my sister the "poor quilt" and we both ohhh. and there was nothing in the old brain cells.

But this looks just is dandy.

carolaug 11-13-2012 04:00 PM

I think it loos great...and you now are a designer!!

gramma nancy 11-13-2012 04:38 PM

What lovely soft colors. I would finish it just like it is now. And, like the other commenter sugested, name it after Sandy and be assured that whoever sleeps under it will be warmed by the quilt and by your gift.

So glad you didn't suffer like so many others in the Northeast.

Blue Cat 11-13-2012 04:52 PM

Well, I am anti-ripping and generally throw things out and start over. But NOT after making all those blocks that look great. I agree with the other suggestions. Fix the three. Then finish it or then try putting the blocks together again. Whichever you decide to do, just enjoy the finished quilt. I think we've all been there and eventually decided we liked the "new" look just as much.

newestnana 11-13-2012 06:31 PM

Finished!

Okay. It's done. I fixed the three formerly correct blocks (making them incorrect but consistent with the other 45) and put it together in such a way that the woven look is preserved in both directions (because of the dominating brown), -and the paisley pink stripes and floral pink stripes line up in the horizontal directiion. The paisley pink stripes and floral pink stripes don't line up in the vertical but I guess it isn't too obvious.

I assure you I tried the rotations, as suggested, but when I've blocks were rotated you lost the "connections" in one direction or the other. That was the point of making it according to the original directions (which I messed up on).

Thanks, everyone!

Btw, not sure how much of a fan I am of qayg. One nice thing, I guess, is that there was absolutely no hand sewing. This pattern used one of the Fun and Done rulers.

QuiltingHaven 11-13-2012 06:45 PM

Put that beautiful quilt together and call it "Hurricane Sandy", she mixed up a lot of the shore and your life. This is something beautiful that will come out of a terrible storm.

Here's a close up that shows the issue with the paisley and floral stripes.

wildyard 11-13-2012 08:22 PM

Even with the issues, they are not that noticable and the quilt is beautiful! You did a great job and still can make the original when you want to. You have a wonderful quilt there and you saved a possible disaster!! You are a hero!!!!!

My time 11-14-2012 11:49 AM

Good to hear your beautiful part of the world is receiving help. It sure looked devastating on the news. If it were me I would not redo 43 blocks. Yikes just the thought is daunting! I'd redo the three and make it work. Good luck. Please repost and show us what you decided to do ok.
