Has anyone taken any of the online classes with "Craftsy"? I have seen these offered in the Quilters World Newsletter and often wondered if they are worth the money.

If anyone has taken any of these classes I would love to hear your opinion/review.

I just go to you tube and watch lessons for free.

I have the first one and I am a beginner and it has been very helpful to me.

I have not taken any classes with this group however I have taken a few classes at quilt university online. They have some terrific instructors and each lesson is set up on a weekly basis. What I have found from these classes: they have a beginning and an ending date, so it keeps you focused on starting and finishing your project. They have an online forum so you get to meet others in your virtual class and bounce ideas off of them, along with the instructor. The instructors I have had, have been helpful and full of help and hints that I hadn't thought of before. The cost is less expensive than classes taught in person in my area. I have taken another class through another company that I cannot remember the name of online however - and it was NOT GOOD at all - because you did it at your own pace (which meant I didn't do it at all and there was really no helpful support. The free online youtube instructions are good also, but they don't have the benefits listed above. For fmq, I ADORE Leah Day's 1-3 minute instructions located on her daystyle designs blog and website. Maybe there should be a thread dedicated to youtube only links! Lots of times I don't like going through a website link with a bunch of other things on it.

Quilt University cannot be beat for online classes. They have outstanding classes (120 of them spanning all aspects of quilting from very traditional to math for quilters to website design and more), excellent instructors (Daphne Greig, Lyric Kinard, Linda Schmidt, Lily Kerns, and many other well-known quilters), great prices (3 lesson class is $27, 4 lesson $36, 5 lesson $45), a class forum so you can interact with classmates and the instructor, a student gallery, a reference library, and more.

They will soon be adding a new free open class on sewing room/studio organizing with photos, suggestions, tips, and ideas...I can't wait to see that!

Quilt U is great. I saved my class lessons and saved parts of the class forum that interested me.

I bought Quilting Quickly II from Missouri Star and they're great - I would especially recommend these classes to beginning quilters. The videos are pretty well made and you can see what the teacher is doing. The teacher (Jenny Doan) is well-spoken and uses the time efficiently. I think the series is a good value - and if you don't catch something the first time around, just go back and watch it again - no expiration date.

I love The Quilting School's videos, too - I think that's Linda V Taylor's site? Watching Irena Bluhm quilt feathers is one of the things that gave me that "light bulb" moment - a breakthrough in trying to learn how to do free-motion quilting. And I learned a lot about needleturn applique watching Alice Wilhoit's videos - again, you can actually see up close what she's doing. Customer service for this site is outstanding, as well.

for specialty things I prefer QU...for all else, find a local teacher, even if it is just a person you can do 1 on 1 with a day a week...if no local person Youtube wins...
