Osnaburg
 

Just read a pattern that used this fabric for the middle layer of a rag quilt. Would like to know if any of you have used it and if so how was it?

Ive used it for a layer of chenille because it frays so good.

Never for a quilt but I've used it to make a linen-look frock coat for my son's re enactor stage and a drape for a large Easter cross. I fringed both of them so it ought to work for a rag quilt. (I don't remember the % of shrinkage, probably should be pre-washed for a quilt.

I like to use 3 layers of flannel. I wonder how soft the Osnaburg is after it rags. The descriptions I've read of the fabric say that it is coarse and rough.

I have also used it for chenille sweatshirt jacket, along with some homespun. It does fray/rag nicely.

I've used it for several rag quilts and love it. It frays great with the flannel and was easier to use than batting since I cut it the same size as the blocks. I haven't prewashed and have had great results. It washes up soft and flat.

I used a huge length of Osnaburg for a wrap that I carried my new baby in. It washed up soft, but shrunk a fair bit. The weave looks too open prewash and closes up nicely after it's washed and dried.
I really love it, but I've seen a big range of weaves and some bolts that have been so scratchy I'd never but it. All are not created equal.
