Painters tape
 

I was wondering who has any pros or cons on using Blue painters tape or Masking tape to tape down your quilt layers... Am worried about glue residue ...

I use masking tape all the time!!!

I've never had any problems using blue painter's tape (or any other color) but have not used masking tape. I've used the painter's tape on my quilt layers, rulers, machine bed with no trouble.

I have used both but prefer blue painter's tape. It has never left any residue on my fabric or floor and peels off easier (and with less pulling on the fabric) than the masking tape I had.

I never use it on my quilts, use it all the time on my rulers, comes off clean.

I use the blue tape, it is safe...

I use it .. I even use it to mark quilts when doing straight lines .. like long diagonals .. just stitch along each side of the tape....I have it in a few widths . Love the stuff!

When I use masking tape to tape down the backing fabric to the floor first, the masking tape is on the inside of the backing (wrong side) so I don't worry about any residue. I do reinforce the tape to fabric with a pin because fabric and tape don't stick all that well. I then lay the batt on top of the backing (no tape) Last I place the top on top of the sandwich carefully matching the register marks on the backing to get it centered. If you are spray basting, then you do that between the steps. If you are pin basting or thread basting it's time to break out the knee pads and crawl around until the job is done. Remove the tape and quilt your sandwich.

Have used both- prefer the blue as it seems to come off cleaner and easier :)

Not sure whether we have the blue tape people have referred to here in the UK - I'm only aware of masking tape. a trip to the hardware shop is needed!

No problem here with painters tape.

Just look for "painter's tape". It has been standardized here in the states as blue for a specific size, but there is a green tape, and another color that is used in painting walls as well. UK may have it packaged differently, but I'm sure you can find it. It is a low residue tape. Hope this helps.

Painter's tape won't leave any marks at all. HOWEVER, I have a problem with the ends curling and sticking to other pieces or to mysef or to the machine or to the scissors.

Masking tape is generally safe if it's left on just a short period of time--------measured in minutes, not days

I use blue tape with no residue especially for marking diagonal lines for quilting. Just don't leave it on there too long.

I agree with this one. Painters tape is great because it always comes off clean no matter how long I leave it one. Sometimes the masking tape wants to pull when removing it.

It might be green in the UK it is the tape that painters use around windows and such when doing close up work. I use masking tape all the time with no trouble even used paper tape left over after my DH surgery once when in a pinch!

Re the colour discussion ... ours in Canada is green, and comes in assorted widths.

I do use it with no problems ... just be careful when peeling it off the fabric as you can pull off a lot of threads pretty fast. Not good!! So, slow and steady is best.

One problem that I've had ..... when pulling off a length, it often tears off in midstream. I thought it was a bad roll, but no, the new one is just the same problem. Any suggestions?

I've used painters tape for years, never had a problem with residue.

Blue painters tape doesn't leave a residue but I have found that masking tape does. I would caution if you use masking tape to test it first; I've had masking tape that was very sticky due to the conditions it had been subjected to (i.e. hot garage, car, or just simply being "old").

I keep the blue painter's tape in my sewing room and use it as others have said. I wouldn't be without it. It was left on one of my quilt projects for several months....I had no problems removing it and there was no residue. The cheaper masking tapes aren't as sticky but I wouldn't use them unless it was just for a short time. My husband has what I think is called drafter's masking tape that I've used that in a pinch...not sticky at all...probably expensive.
