Hello ladies - I want to put a "Monogram Block" on the backs of my quilts (call it ego - or just for prosperity).

Below I have uploaded two images. The end result, albiet only a photoshop illustration and secondly the method.

With the "method" I have not used colour and have numbered each of the elements.

Could those of you who are experienced with Paper Piecing please cast you eye on this and let me know if I am on the right track and whether or not this is a workable design and method.

I have seen a Leah Day video and I imagine you begin at one end and finish at the other. Piecing the top and bottom last.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Assuming, as you said, that you want to do it on one foundation.

You need to split #2 into two pieces as you can't piece a shape like that.
So it would be 1, 2A, 2B.
Just draw a line splitting that alcove off.

And the current 3-11 positions need to be reversed.

After you do the 1/2 section, then you'll have a straight line to add the next piece to the left (currently 11 but should be 3).

There really isn't a #12 like you have as it would already be pieced.

The last strip on the right can be added anytime after the 1/2A piece is sewn.

Perfect suggestions from MTS...split the L across, not up and down...sew 1 and 2, then add the bottom 2B...

I agree with MTS - Split the "L". And so the order like she suggests. Also, if you've never done paper piecing before, lower your stitch length to about 1.5 and use a size 14 needle. When you are coming to those points, sew just a HAIR to the inside of the lines, so when you add the border, you won't be cutting off the points. Ask me how I know this! Design looks great!

tellabella, do you suggest splitting the "L" on the horizontal line where it takes the dive to the right?

Is there a difference?

Now I have these suggestions I could also put a cross piece in the "A" so as to make it less abstract. What do you think? Or do you like the abstract?

It really doesn't make a difference if you split the L vertically or horizontally. It's the same fabric, but you'd have a bigger piece if you went horizontally.

If you want to bridge the A, you've now created a problem for yourself. ;-)

Paper piecing, at least this kind, requires a full straight edge for placement of the next piece.

You need to split #9 (using the nos in your diagram) into 3 pieces.

But going left to right, after you've sewn #10, you now have an edge that goes the length of the letter.
You'd be able add piece 9A, but there is no way to pp the 9B and 9C.
So that won't work.
