I'm new to this process - as in this is my first project. <grin> I want to make my son a wall hanging using nine of these origami cranes. I created the layout, but I'm not sure which section to do first. Can anyone help me determine the proper sequence? Hopefully you can see the crane in the layout - I plan to use one oriental fabric for each crane and then use a black to surround the crane.

You designed this paper peicing design yourself right? You're going to have to break it up into smaller sections to make the block, otherwise you'll have lots of inside seams and that wont' work. Ok, after further investigation, I'm not sure breaking it down will work either. maybe some more experienced paper piecers will have better answers. sorry!

Use a dark pen or marker and draw where you see lines that go across a large section. I see one from lower left to upper right. Then see if you need to divide these further. Then do each section and put them back together again. If you make several copies and try the steps you will see how to do it best.

You have one diagonal that goes from side to side. Above this are two sections and below are three sections. You will need to cut all the sections apart and then piece each section, and sew them together after.
Nice pattern.

I am not an expert but this is how I would divide it. One line was not straight in middle bottom. I made a straight line there for ease of piecing. If you do not want it straight then you will need to play around with it. Good luck - please post when you do it!

dito but do not forget to add your 1/4 in seam allowance

Oh - I should add that I would piece it as follows: the dark lines separate the drawing into 5 pieces. Once each piece is assembled then you would sew the top two tog, the bottom three tog, then sew the top to the bottom.

THANKS!!! I'll adjust the line to make it straight. My son's birthday is in May. I'll let you know if this is a 2011 or 2012 project. <grin>

I bought one of those "add a quarter" rulers after seeing a youtube video about paper piecing.
