I've only done a few quilts and recently learned how to machine piece. On my most recent quilt, I used a regular (mechanical) pencil with the quilting stencil. When I was done with the quilt, I washed it, and the pencil didn't come out! Has this ever happened to you, and if so, what did you use to "get the lead out?" Thanks for your help.

Don't put it in the dryer!

Use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, very wet. I use it all the time on my mechanical pencils. It works.

Have you tried a bar of fels naptha soap on the dampened markings? Works well on stains on old linens. Also no dryer pab

That's why I bought a Fons and Porter pencil and it is absolutely wonderful! Love the white one too for dark fabrics. (Note: I just ordered the refill leads and bought a 9 mm mechanical pencil from Wal-Mart - think I got three for $4 - and saved a lot of $$$ that way!)

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. Right now, it is soaking after spraying Oxy Clean on it. If it still doesn't come out, I will have to pick up some of the suggested items tomorrow and try again.

I agree with purplemem - don't put it in the dryer. This is good advice for all stains. The dryer will set the stain.

Spray the pencil marks with Shout. Then re-wash the quilt.

That is a wonderful idea. Thanks for that tip.

I had that happen recently and used Awesome cleaner. You can get it at Wal-Mart or Dollar General. Test it first to see if it will damage your fabric. But this did work for me. Good luck.
