Anyone know what is the perfect size for a young child's "blankie"? My kids both had a blanket they adored and it went with us wherever we went. They slept with it (not cover with it, but hugged it) and it was always a source of comfort when they were hurting. I'm trying to make small quilts to accomplish something similar for the little ones in Japan, but I'm not sure what size to make. Any idea?

In the early 90s, quilted baby blankets were usually 36 by 45. That seemed like a nice size.

I'm thinking for the littles ones 36X36 and for a bit older 42X42. That way your using the width of the fabric and not having to piece the backs. Even whole cloth quilts of fun prints I'm sure would be greatly appreciated.

From your description, I am wondering if you mean what we call a lovey? When I make a baby quilt for a present, I always make a second one - same fabrics - that is about 20x20. There are times that the regular size ones are too big to take - in the car, as the walk around, etc. The mini are the right size for them to cuddle with and carry around without tripping over it all the time.

18 to 20 inches is the size I did for my grands.

We call them 'silkies' or 'loveys'. I just made 3 of them, just 14" squares. Layered flannel backed satin and flannel, and added 1/2" binding, using the satin. Just big enough to get a good grip and hug.
