Hi everyone. I found some rick rack at walmart today, it looks like I got a good deal but I don't know. I do know that I have seen quilt with rick rack on them years ago and love it. BUT the problem is I am now drawing a blank on how to use this in a quilt....please help.

ric rack is expensive at quilt shops. You got a great deal! It looks great with just the tips showing used as piping in a binding or sashing.

Great deal! My advice would be to wash and dry the rick rack in hot water - maybe in a garmet/lingerie bag. I think that it may shrink a lot - at least it used to when I sewed for my girls.

But does rick rack look funny (girlie) when added to a baby boy quilt????

What? I have never washed rick rack before used...will it really shrink alot?

I saw a quilt in a magazine in the last couple of months where the quilter used the rickrack over the border seams. It was sewn down the center and that was the quilting. I would think if the quilt was in boy colors and there was not a lot of rickrack, that it would work. Children like texture and it would be fun to play with.

It is this quilt (quilt top so far). It is all bright primary colors and the rick rack is red. So do you think that would look acceptable for a boy? I just thought if I added a little bit of stair type strip zig zagging down it (3 different spots) that it would add some pizazz?

We have a child advocacy group that uses the kite as a symbol and the rick rack makes the most perfect strings for the kite as well as being able to decorate the quilt. You can also use it for fishing line with lures attached, balloon strings, just a few ideas to share.

I see nothing wrong with rickrack in a baby boy quilt!!

I think it's acceptable to use on a boy's quilt. My DGD recently made a very plain denim shopping bag and used the rick rack as flower stems for yoyo flowers. It looks adorable. Just three pieces of green rick rack running up the bag with yoyos on top of the rr.

I have sewn it over the seams in some of my baby quilts....adds character to them!

chickadeee55 03-09-2011 01:25 PM

I agree it adds alittle something to a quilt.

I think it would look great in a little boy quilt, as long as itisnt pink, lol!

Fons and Porter braided the ric rac and made it look very cool. They took 2 strands and wrapped them around each other. Made it look like a rope. Then they sewed down the center over a seam. I love the look and if you use the right colors you will have a wonderful boy baby quilt!!!

Years ago when we were square dancing, every piece of rick rack that I used in my first dress shrank and had to be ripped out, washed in HOT water and resewed. On a quilt it might be pretty on an ocean background, but not in areas that need to lie flat.

I agree color has a lot to do with the choice boy/girl. Red rick rack on top above looks quite boyish to me.

I've seen rick rack to give the illusion of waves in a baby sail boat quilt
