I am making a fleece toddler blanket...I have a center panel,of a pro basketball team..then i got co-ordinating fleece to make squares around the panel..i am going to put flannel or cotton on the back.so what it looks like in on the back won't matter..but i don't want it lumpy at the seams.
so..i want to butt the fleece up against each other and do a zig zag stitch. Should i use a strip of fusable stablizer,(like a couple inches on each side of the seam,pressed together ) first to keep them butted? and would the zig zag stitch be ok, do you think? i know it won't unravel..

How about overlapping the pieces by 1/2 inch or so and zig-zag the edges down?

I would try this on some small pieces to see if you like the look with and without the fusable stabilizer. I don't know how well fusible and fleece mix?
You could also try using a decorative stitch to sew the seam lines.

If fusible does work...you could fuse the seam lines and then sandwich the quilt, using the actual sewing along the seams as the quilting, too.

I made a poncho for my GGD. Well I redid it. I got it at a yard sale cut out poncho parts sewn together, I read pattern and it says to overlap. now that sounds kinda hard but it really isn't. I ripped out her seams and overlapped and it looks Great. You can use Pinking shears and cut very close to sewing line but not into as I did and it gives it good clean finish.. Also use a zigzag because of the fleece stretching.
I am going to be doing one in camoflage in a few days going to do it the same way. Never thought about useing the left overs and piecing them put you can bet I am now Thank you Very much for the Idea. I believe if you pink them on both sides you will not have the bulk. Fleece is very strong and very forgiveing. Thanks again for the Idea.
Forgot something LOL I would not put batting in usless it was very thin. Flannel would be ok I think, maybe Flannel without any kind of Batting to cover seams. But seams if pinked do not have bulk and are not unattractive.

i started sewing on it this morning..i sued the fusable stablizer cut at about 3" strips..it worked wonderful! i also sewed it up, while the paper was still on..the paper came off, no problem at all. it is turning out pretty good. i just have to put the backing on it, and i plan on using a saucer to gently round out the corners..i love rounded corners..lol

i am well pleased with the way it came together..i may even try some different shapes, or maybe even a 15" block after the holidays!

watterstide, you know exactly what you are doing and where you are at that is Awesome!!! I can't wait to use what I have as left overs,Mine will be mixed,camoflage,scotish plaid,Black,another camoflage with deer maybe use the red scots plaid in front of deer. LOL.

So you ended up zigzagging over fusible stabilizer? Butting the edges together? Looks wonderful!

yes, basicly that is what i did, but i used a special stitch on my janome 6600..not the zig zag..it looks like a zig zag with straight stitching added on both sides. clear as mud huh?!
the only paper that didn't come out, was the paper in the center of the stitches, but i am not worried about it...if i had used a stretchy type thread, i could of gently tugged on the stitches and they would of probably popped off..or most of them would of..but like i said, i am not worried, they will not show, and they will disappear with washings. i had to stop sewing for the night..:( but will start back up bright and early, soon and the DH leaves for work!)

Really great ideas! Wish I had read this before I added a fleece strip 10" wide to my toddler quilt, because I just used a straight stitch and 1/4 " seam, and I can feel it there. Glad you asked, Kim.

LOL means Laugh out Loud!!! Like SID Is stitch in Ditch. BOM Block of the month Get it? LOL!!!!
