I did a BOM star by Carol Doak. The finised block is approx 12 1/2". Can I make it into a pillow? I've never made a pillow. How would I do it?

Great, thanks!! I wasn't sure if I needed to do something different with a quilt block.

Making a pillow is actually very easy. I'm sure there are sites all over the net with info but, really, if you have any sewing experience, you can wing it. Here's my version:

Cut a coordinating piece of fabric the same size as your block. Pin them together with right sides facing. Stitch three sides completely. On the fourth side, stitch about 2-3 inches from each corner toward the center. Trim the thread ends and turn right side out. Stuff with filling. Now comes the hard part....fold the open, raw edges in and pin. You will stitch the two sides together about 1/8 inch from the edge. Done!

Hints: 1. When pinning the final stitch, gently tug the fabric while holding on to the corners of the pillow before pinning. 2. Mash the pillow center down as you sew the final seam so that it will fit under the machine and not get stuck. I stop every couple of inches and mash down so the pillow doesn't hang up on the machine parts.

I just put a border around 12 inch blocks to make them a standard 18" pillow size, then sew on a split back and voila...sofa cushion!

Actually, no! <g> a quilt block is really just a piece of fabric created by stitches holding small pieces together.
If I were making a pillow cover that was going to be removable, I might consider backing the block with some fusible webbing (you can buy it by the yard) so that it would be washable and the raw edges would be protected, OR
This could be fun!
If you took and put a border around it as one quilter just suggested, you could buy some cheap muslin,
put right sides together (block and muslin) using your 1/4" seam allowance, stitch around all sides, leaving a few inches open to turn the quilt block and backing right sides out.
Top stitch the opening closed, and then treat the whole thing as you would a single piece of fabric.
The back of your block would be better protected for washing if the cover were removable. <wave> (Eleanor Burns uses this method to "birth" some of her quilts)
