Pincushions

I am in the process of making pincushions and am wondering what filling to use. Some directions call for polyester fiberfill while others call for a mixture of sand. I would love to know some of your thoughts ... you know, what works and what doesn't. Thanks so much!

I use reptile litter. Its crushed walnut shells. Keeps your pins sharp and oiled. you can get it at pet stores. i get mine at Pet smart.

I bought a pattern and it called for half fiber fill and half split peas!

I only used fiberfill in mine. I'm afraid to use the walnut shells as someone might be allergic to nuts.

I use flaxseeds, and sometimes the poly beads.

I have been saving my dryer lint. I got to thinking it is from washing my 100% cotton fabric, it's cleaned and why throw it away? My next pincushion will be stuffed with it!

I don't like using polyester filling as it tends to dull needles and pins. If you can find emery grains, that is very good. It is what they used to put in the strawberry attached to the tomato pincushions. I like to use some of that and/or some wool roving, such as that used in felting.

Now I am wondering too. I used the polyfil before, but do need mine with some bit of weight. I would want to use something that would be ok if it got wet, or needed washing.

I use steel wool and raw wool.

Here is some information from a blog, buzzing and bumbling.
